Is it illegal to carry or use a slingshot in any areas around the USA?

I am getting to go on a weeklong road trip down the east coast where I plan to cut across the Blue Ridge parkway and drive west.

I don't have a destination or a plan, I want to spend some time in a part of the country I really haven't seen. I thought I might go through some rural areas where I could just pull off a road somewhere and plink some cans with a wristrocket if it was a nice day and I felt like getting out of the car.

Then it occurred to me that I don't know anything about any laws regarding slingshots. Looking on the Internet posed the usual problem looking for data, separating the wheat from the chaff.

Does any Freeper have any knowledge of any such laws in their area?

In 1950`s I made a wooden slingshot and a boomerang as part of the shop curriculum in the local school in NY State.

I say take back our country from the communists!

I believe ‘assault sling shots’ are illegal. You know, ones with a folding stock, or holds more than ten rocks.

And of course, never in a million years could you get away with calling them what they were called in my day.

What about slings? When I was a kid the parents pretty much banned making traditional sling shots — the strips of inner tubes we used for the elastic tended to break and injure eyes. So we mostly used biblical style slings. We were even invited to bring them to bible class for show and tell! The big kids could put a hole in a fence!

I am a slingshot shooter from way back...:) When I moved to Japan when I was eight, I made my first slingshot that worked. (I made plenty that didn’t, and had lots of welts over time on my arms and face)

Then when I moved to the Philippines a few years later, me and my friends wanted to get machetes. We liked to go out and hike around in the jungle (which was so dense we got lost for four hours only about 100 yards from the road...) and we thought machetes would really complete our gear.

All the Filipino yard boys had their own, and sometimes they did some pretty neat looking work on the handles. The guy who worked on our yard was very cool, and explained to me how he and his friends made them from old leaf springs.

He showed up one day and gave me one. Can’t even remember his name.

Funny thing is, nobody said anything to me. My mom and dad knew I had it, but they didn’t think there was anything wrong at all with me having one. Heh, kind of funny now when I look back at it.

Can you imagine some kid coming home today and telling his mom that his 11 year old friend had his own machete!

Depends .... is it black? Does it have a removable magazine? Does it have a handgrip? And above all, is it considered an “assault weapon” (aka AK-47 Slingshot)?

Actually, there are all kinds of laws regarding crossbows. Consult your individual state.

So far as I know, there are no restrictions about possessing a slingshot in Virginia so long is it is not concealed.....unless of course you have a concealed carry permit.

You can even open carry a pistol in Virginia; no permit required.

I knew a Green Beret, who when sequestered for months, got himself a wrist rocket and a really big, economy bottle of aspirin. By the time the bottle was used up, he could nail a fly at a respectable distance.

It isn’t a firearm

That's right. It's an armfire.

Yeah...we did slings, too. I got decent but not good. I could make a stone go really far, but not really accurate. It was REALLY hit or miss.

We also tried to learn to use bolas (we thought it was spelled and pronounced as “bolo”)

We used to practice throwing them at trees, flagpoles, and so on. We were in the Philippines, and since there were all kinds of larger wildlife wandering around (monkeys, boars, snakes, monitor lizards and so on) then we were obligated to capture or kill what we could. Well, at least in our minds, and fortunately, we were so inept there was never any chance we would get close enough to any of them to even try.

But we tried to play the part, blazing through the jungle with my machete, hacking at stuff to get through, even though if we walked to the left or right a little you could walk as easily as if you were on a treeless beach.

And after a few minutes of hacking away, you would suddenly realize how sucky it would be to really have to do that for real.

Holy crap. I DO have an assault slingshot. It has a folding stock (that goes over the wrist) and a high capacity fast reloading magazine! (well, maybe not really all that fast without dropping your ammo all over the ground)

OMG. And it is BLACK too! I am so scrooooooooood!

They say ridicule is a great weapon, the problem is that it is largely ineffective against liberals, because they cannot even register that it is being applied to them.

Sigh. A part of me realizes how bad things have gotten when I seriously have to wonder whether a slingshot IS illegal anywhere.

I don’t doubt it. I have had some pretty accurate shots myself, and I am just a hacker.

That is 100% the way it should be everywhere.

It should have never gotten to this point.

I checked out the link —that guy is GOOD!

I also noticed a series of vids by another guy who makes rather more involved slingshot “weapons” — very interesting, tho’ there’s something a bit unnerving about the guy’s laugh...

Git your fine self a few of these. Too much fun, and quite accurate. They’ll never know what hit ‘em. Great for plinking off squirrels and pigeons...because we’ll all be eating squirrels and pigeons, eventually. If we’re lucky. :)

I would imagine a direct hit to the gonads would get someone’s attention as well...just sayin’...

Ammo? Steelies and/or rocks. Your choice. Still perfectly legal as far as I can tell.

I can remember looking through the statutes in Florida maybe 30 years ago and noticed that it was illegal to carry a “Buck Knife”.

My guess is it has been repealed and I doubt it was ever enforced in most areas. I suspect it was referring to the Buck model 110 folding lockback but all it said was buck knives.

I guess technically you could be prosecuted fro carrying a small Buck pocket knife.
