All around the Northeast -- from Pennsylvania to Maryland to Connecticut -- billions of cicadas are starting to emerge from the ground after 17 years of underground adolescence mostly spent feeding on the fluid inside tree roots.
While this emergence is the biggest in the Northeastern U.S. in a long while, the Southern states have had recent visits too. There are about 15 distinct broods of cicadas that emerge regularly in the U.S. In 2011, the Great Southern Brood popped up across the American Southeast.

Actually, I don’t think they are all that bad. They eat other insects, they don’t carry West Nile and they “play the maracas” in between meals.
I love to hang the empty shells on my clothes and then wait for one of my daughters to see it while inside the house.
We had brood #1 in 2012, this one is brood #2 to my understanding. Eyeballs and wings rained out of the trees from the squirrels and birds feasting. They split the ends of twigs to lay their eggs, we had that derecho wind come through last summer and a lot of those weakened/dead branches came down.

Cicada’s are a beneficial insect, although I have no idea what a plague of them will do. I may look up some recipes and freak my vegetarian wife out.

Pan fried cicadas are considered a delicacy in some rural parts of Ohio. They’ve been showing up every 17th. summer for a couple hundred million years, only NOW the media decides to make a big production out if it.

They eat insects? I thought they just drank sap. What insects do they eat?
If you have a young tree planted they could really mess it up when they split the branches to lay their eggs, some people cover any young saplings with netting.

Natures pruner. Lay their eggs in live branches that are around pencil diameter. The branch dies at that point. The branch falls to the ground carrying the eggs with it.

My wife and I were on vacation in the blue ridge mountains a couple of years ago when the 7 year cicadas came out. It started on the second day of our vacation very soon after sunrise. It sounded like someone was in our cabin with a huge chain saw! It went on the rest of the week...all day long. They about drove me nuts!
In Va we had the 7 year cicadas come up. There are 7 year, 13 year and 17 year cicada's then there are the regular ones who are out making noise all the time.

I've signed an executive order to authorize the creation of an insect exchange run by the new Insect & Cicada Kontrol (ICK) agency. The ICK agency czar will report directly to me as a new cabinet level position. Companies with cicadas on their property that threaten the innocent citizens in their communities can buy and exchange bug credits on our new government run exchange to fulfill their obligations to society. This new government investment will keep all our free American citizens safe from the thread of insect swarms in the future.
