Tech Ping, My Website Host Has Been Offline for a Week, What to do?

My website host has been offline for a week citing weather problems. Now I am concerned about my Google ratings when what seemed to be a few days has turned into a long time.

Do I need to be concerned. How can I move to a different place if necessary.

Help!

Hello ronald Ron r: Hello, Welcome to the company.com How may I help you today? Soup: My website www.Womderful website.com is still not online after the power outage is it just my site or are you still having massive failure?

Ron: Yes Soup? Ron: Due to severe storms in the Saint Louis, Missouri area our Data Center experienced a severe power outage on both utility grids. Even though we have standby generators, the utility load was dropped across both A/B utility grids and this caused momentarily loss of power to our network. Upon power being restored, our immediate focus was to restore our network, routers, core switches, and email servers so we could communicate to our customers. Reports indicate this is complete for our clustered mail servers. Next, our SAN arrays which provide data storage attempted to rebuild and eventually it was determined the rebuild would not complete. The current status is we are restoring from our Disaster Recovery backup to the existing and new SAN array hardware. Currently our Network Engineers have not given us an ETA as to when the restore will be completed but it is our highest priority and I expect and update very soon. We do understand the urgency of the situation and will keep you updated via our website and support ticket center on the complete restoration of service. We appreciate your patience and understanding regarding this matter. We will follow-up with corrective action so this does not happen again and I assure you we will address this matter.

What does this mean in English?

Here is the reality.

You should own your website code.
You should own the source and the compile.
You should not be in long contracts. Think wireless companies.
You should have backup plans.
How much money do you think you are loosing cause you saved a few bucks a month?

Sounds like a catastrophic outage which they should have been better situated to prevent/recover from. Once it’s a done deal, there are priorities and sequences that need to be followed to perform an orderly restore. It also sounds like their network “engineers” are not top quality folks or they would have been better postured for the outage and subsequent recovery. They probably tried to save some cash by cutting corners and it has the potential to bite them big time. Good luck.

Do you have a copy of the website? If so, post it to another host and update your DNS settings to point to the new server and your problem is solved.

If you don’t have an exact copy of your site downloaded to your local computer (or to the person that programmed your site) then you are SOL until the servers come back online.

Call your programmer and see if they have a copy.
