Here's a bit of advice real "safety experts" are giving kids and parents. It's poisonous. But first, the back story:
The other day, a blogger named Lisa Flam wrote on a popular parenting website that her seventh-grader came home one day and announced he "didn't do it." Didn't do what? He and his friend were walking home from school (points for that!), when a white-haired lady stood in her doorway and requested the boys' help. "She asked them to move a medium-size package from her front step into her house," Flam wrote. "On the sidewalk, the boys wondered what to do."
At first, they did absolutely nothing, knowing that they "shouldn't." After all, they didn't know this woman, making her a stranger, making this fall into the dreaded category of "stranger danger." But then, after the woman said she's 84 years old and couldn't move it herself, the other boy did the dirty deed:
He helped an old lady.
The blogger's son did not. So torn between gratitude that her son understands that the world is full of danger and doubts as to whether his refusal to help actually constituted good judgment the mom called (who else?) the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Those are the folks who put the missing kids' pictures on the milk cartons and neglected to mention that the vast majority were not taken by a stranger.

What?
Didn’t one of the boys have a tazer?
This is, of course, theoretically possible.
But I wonder if it has ever happened. I doubt it.
I have never seen any quantification that children are at greater risk today than in past decades. Yet our society constantly acts as if they are.
Thereby creating its own set of problems.
When I was the age of these boys I rode my bike on a camping trip 1200 miles through the Ozarks. With my 16 year old brother.
It would never have crossed our minds not to help an old lady.
That's the ticket.
One boy could have gone to help the lady while the other covered him against treachery with his water pistol.
Oh... wait. A water pistol would have been confiscated in school and the kid would be in jail... never mind.
Sometimes the "authorities" are the more dangerous.
What happened to : “ I’ll go get my mom to help (or DAD)”?
My kids would have known that reply 40 years ago if the person was not a family friend.
Now we have kids bragging; “I didn’t do it” and a mother not going to the site but instead calling “officialdom”!
Sorry state of affairs!
Here in Virginia children hold doors open for adults, men holds doors open for women, and if you see someone in need assistance you offer before you are asked.
Teaching our children to become like the Eloi.
We are 800,000 years ahead of our own time.
Same here, in South Carolina.
How did that medium sized box appear on her doorstep? Why didn’t the person delivering it bring it inside?
How could a couple of kids be afraid of a little old lady? surely they could have overpowered her if she tried anything naughty. If the L.O.L. was the size of moochelle, then perhaps the boys were smart in not helping.
Did the L.O.L. offer them candy?
sigh...long gone are the days when boys would help anyone and then get rewarded with milk and cookies.
In a “Lenny’s Clam Bar” some 25 or so years ago I listened to a (non custodial) father, most likely a Lawyer, tell his 10 year old son every possible way you could sue some one. They were having a gleeful old time and doing some serious father, son bonding.
It was disgusting and reminded me what a burglar father might teach his son.
It might be better for granny to move it herself or pay someone to move it, rather then have some kid help her, who then sues when they pull a muscle or worse when they cry rape and that granny kissed their forehead in a carnal manner.
Has this been done? And if not, what is the hold up?
Just putting my 2cents worth in Former Fetus...but South Carolina is THE most polite place I’ve EVER been to in the entire United States, and I’ve been through most of it. I’ve spent actual time there, and loved it.
That would have cost extra postage if it was USPS.
They are inculcating “fear” into children (intentionally)——this constant underlying worldview which is necessary for a Communist State. They are constantly engaging the Limbic system-—which is abnormal and evil to do in little children-—it destroys rationality-—elevates emotions above Reason. Maturity is measured by the ability for Reason to control emotions. Always directing children to emotions, rather than Logic—will eliminate the ability to use Logic. (This is how our schools destroy Reason and Logic in the classroom). Not only that-—they link ugly emotions with Christian Ethics-—like “nag” to “mother” etc. “Loving” to Communism:

All children should have “Trust” in adults and their environment. If they don’t-—then they will become emotionally disturbed adults-—very insecure at most times and unable to trust others (no long term healthy relationships). It destroys the family and their children.
Montesquieu stated that it is necessary to promote Virtue (trust) in the people for Free Republics....Fear in people for Totalitarian governments and loyalty in Monarchies.
Trust is learned in early childhood, but it can be undermined easily especially in children under 12.
The delivery man/woman/person/whatever bring it in? Ha! They sneak up to the door, ring the bell and immediately sprint as fast as they can back to their truck so they won’t have to bring it in for you. They never hang around long enough for anyone to answer the door.
Sure, the mom is so worried about a little old lady molesting her teenager but probably can’t be bothered with him texting total strangers and putting his picture and where he’s going to be to everyone on Facebook.
I’ve think you’ve got it.
Sadly, there have already been real examples of such danger.
Many serial killers/rapists/kidnapers have used older women to bring their victims guard down. Typically, it is the psychos wife
There was some guy here in NYC who would pretend to be a crippled old man to get young girls to help him upstairs.
