Paula Deen admits in deposition to using N-word, telling racist jokes

Celebrity chef Paula Deen admitted in a recorded deposition to telling racist jokes, using the N-word, and planning a slavery-themed wedding, according to multiple reports.

The May 17 deposition where she made the alleged admissions is part of a $1.2 million lawsuit brought by Lisa Jackson, the former manager of a Savannah, Georgia, restaurant run by Deen and her brother Bubba Hiers.

Jackson alleges in the suit that Deen used the N-word at the restaurant and that Hiers sexually harassed her.

According to the reports, in the deposition, Deen replied “Yes, of course,” when asked if she used the N-word.

Deen also reportedly admitted telling racist jokes, explaining: “It’s just what they are — they’re jokes…most jokes are about Jewish people, rednecks, black folks…I can’t determine what offends another person.”

Jackson said also Deen wanted African-American employees to act like slaves for a big wedding she was planning. Deen explained she got the idea from a restaurant where "the whole entire waiter staff was middle-aged black men, and they had on beautiful white jackets with a black bow tie," the National Enquirer reports. The magazine also quoted Deen as saying: “I mean, it was really impressive. That restaurant represented a certain era in America…after the Civil War, during the Civil War, before the Civil War…It was not only black men, it was black women…I would say they were slaves.”

Her brother Bubba also admitted to referring to President Obama with the N-word, the report claims.

Yep, because the only unforgivable crime left in this country is being a racist.

I'm having a hard time really figuring out the problem here, aside from maybe poor decision making.

So she used the "N-word." So what? The blacks use the word without impunity. Hell, even hosts and guests on MSNBC and CNN have used the word and the networks never censor it! With it being such a colloquial word in the black community, why is it denigrating when a white southern woman says it?

Second, she told racist jokes. Look at her response, I think it's perfectly valid:

"It’s just what they are — they’re jokes…most jokes are about Jewish people, rednecks, black folks…I can’t determine what offends another person."

I'm Italian, and people tell "wop" jokes all the time around me at the office, but I'm not offended. Again, guilty of poor taste or a lack of situational awareness, but hardly a crime.

Finally, note that Lisa Jackson, the COMPLAINTANT, is who's saying that Deen wanted employees to act like slaves. Deen notes:

"the whole entire waiter staff was middle-aged black men, and they had on beautiful white jackets with a black bow tie,"

...continuing...

“I mean, it was really impressive. That restaurant represented a certain era in America…after the Civil War, during the Civil War, before the Civil War…It was not only black men, it was black women…I would say they were slaves.”

She commented on how impressive it was to have black men and black women donning white suits to act as wait staff IN LISA JACKSON'S RESTAURANT! She didn't DEMAND anyone do it, she asked if the current wait staff would be willing to dress like that for a wedding, a themed wedding. Then she happened to comment that the blacks during the Civil War era might have been slaves in continuance of her Civil War era remarks. When she says, "I would say they were slaves," I read her to mean that she was commenting on their employment disposition during that era, not that they were definitively slaves. Many freedmen worked in the homes of their former masters even after they were dismissed.

I'm not defending the woman's poor choices, but I believe this Lisa Jackson woman is creating a storm in teacup. She wants her 15 minutes of fame or her quick payout from a settlement so she can "get hers."

This makes me sick, both for Deen's poor choices and for this idiot Lisa Jackson's behavior as well.

So, is it illegal to use the ‘N’ word, then? That must be by race, because blacks use in. So it’s only ok for certain kinds of people. And what is the fine? Jail time? Shame? The stocks? Just sayin’.

I’m kind of sick about Political Correctness run amok, personally. What about just quitting and getting another job? Avoiding someone who is tacky or rude? I’m not defending her, but just because someone is ‘offended’ is it really worth a lawsuit? Could we call it ‘thin-skinned’? Ever?

It is a free country still, is it not?

She continues to be Smithfield’s spokesperson no matter how many times they’ve been caught hiring illegals. She also promised to have both candidates’ wives on her show in ‘08 and this last time but she only had on moochelle each time. She’s been on my don’t watch list for years. Can’t stand her.

Exactly, Deens words and actions are stupid and degrading but are they worth 1.2 million dollars?

“Its OK for Jackson to call us racial slurs (which I am sure she has), but not for Paula???”

The problem is there is no epithet that blacks or hispanics
can use that really offends whites. I’m no more bothered by
their use of honky, cracker or what ever than they are of
calling each other the “n” word. They can call me what they
like I don’t care and that really ticks them off.
I guess you could look to Darwin for the answer to that.

Yorkie, don’t over-react to this; it’s pretty common in multiracial groups that know each other too well.

Paula pays her people too much, and they get cocky after a while. Thin-skinned people aren’t worth the time of day.

It isn’t any kind of Southern belle.

More like Belle Starr- or Fannie Foxx with a frying pan- howdyyy boys!! Actually, both Belle Starr and Fannie Foxx were much more interesting than this annoying personage, and her equally annoying po’ widdle victim who no doubt has a complexion angle.

Line up with all the EBT card holders.... and “your momma’s too thin and your daddy’s too fat”..... “drag it around like a ball and chain.. I’d like to find your little child and kick it’s little a@@”

“Get Over It!” Thanks to the Eagles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1H-Y7MAASkg

Why do that when one can sue and retire.

The only people that care are the Negroes trying to shake Paula Deen down for some folding money. If she were just some poor old cracker no one would care BUT she’s a rich old cracker that Ms Jackson hopes to profit from. I’d be willing to bet that the dreaded “N” word is used frequently by Ms. Jackson herself or some of her close associates and family. Negroes seem to be offended by the “N” word when it’s profitable and entertained by it when every Negro entertainer on the face of the planet uses it. Selective indignation is predictable.

According to alleged highlights from the deposition printed in the National Enquirer:
[W]hen asked if she wanted black men to play the role of slaves at a wedding she explained she got the idea from a restaurant her husband and her had dined at saying, “The whole entire waiter staff was middle-aged black men, and they had on beautiful white jackets with a black bow tie.

“I mean, it was really impressive. That restaurant represented a certain era in America…after the Civil War, during the Civil War, before the Civil War…It was not only black men, it was black women…I would say they were slaves.”

This is a tradition harkening back to times that Gentlemen dressed in full evening wear of black long-tailed jacket, black trousers, and starched formal white shirt. The servants dressed in a less elaborate version of the same.
Today it helps to distinguish the waiters from the diners and has absolutely no bearing whatsoever with slavery or the Civil War. Hopefully her ignorance of history is what is sincere not a woman brainwashed by intentional hate.

Outstanding and quite astute. The “real” blacks of the US knew this all along, and the non-Christians and many of the day to day folks who are morally conservative... went along with the expected gravy train. Only to find out that he is the napkin carrier for a bunch of lily white liberal a@@holes assuaging their intellectual guilt for being born white. The man is a complete fraud and dangerous to what is true of America— that it is a land of opportunity regardless, unless you want to wear the perpetual mantle of victim.
