Police in Guangxi have seized a stash of smuggled, decades-old chicken feet, some dating as far back as 1967, which were waiting to be processed, SCMP reports.
The chicken feet were part of a 20 tonne stash of meat smuggled from Vietnam, according to police. As well as chicken feet, the unlicensed storage site also contained beef tripe and cartilage.
The gang operating the smuggling ring planned to process 46-year-old chicken feet "with bleach and other chemicals" to disguise them as seemingly fresh chicken feet. Each tonne of meat processed this way would net them an estimated 16,000 yuan.
The idea that chicken feet dating back to the 1960s would surface now, having survived all this time, frozen, is pretty disgusting. It's also puzzling. I was under the impression that many homes in rural china still lack refrigerators. Houses in my family's ancestral home in rural Fujian only got fridges in the last two years. It seems questionable at best that people in poverty stricken parts of China and Vietnam would choose to preserve 20 tonnes of chicken feet, at no small cost, for over 40 years.

Gotta rotate your stored food, preppers.
Probably destined for dog food to be exported.
I dunno...I was at a Dim Sum place once and they served deep fried chicken feet. I was gonna try ‘em but no one could tell me if I was supposed to gnaw the meat off ‘em or just toss in my mouth and eat ‘em bones and all.
The Chinese Police will be picking the Bones out of this case for some time to come.
Scratching around for clues.
They don’t tend to get Cold Feet on a case once they start investigating...this maybe the exception.
As Lynard Skynard said... Oo Oo that smell
I recall an article in perhaps New Yorker Magazine many years ago where the author was explaining that Dim Sum (pot stickers) in China use recycled cardboard for the primary “meat” filling. I thought about that yesterday when I was label reading at the grocery store (yes I am one of “those people”).
The package of cookies or crackers I was looking at listed “microcrytaline cellulose” as an ingredient... you what that is? SAWDUST.
I be skeptical.
As the author points out, why would somebody keep chicken feet, or anything else, frozen for 40 years? Most freezers don’t even work for that long.
Don’t object to the notion that somebody somewhere, especially in China, would be above doing such a thing. Just the practicality of the story.
From a chemical perspective, cellulose is more or less cellulose.
So as far as its effects on the human body, I doubt it matters greatly whether the origin of the cellulose is wheat bran or sawdust.
It’s all “fiber,” which a few years ago was considered the best thing in the world for you.
Good point. Can you do carbon dating on chicken feet? This is what happens on a slow news day.
As my wife is Chinese, I’ve had my run-in with Chicken Feet.
You want to just let your teeth scrape the bones clean. I’ve had ‘em, but, like pig’s feet, it ain’t meat. It’s some kind of gelatinous whatever that just seems like a waste of time.
But, the worst thing about Chicken Feet, is the preparation.
In their raw state, they bear a strong resemblance to a baby’s hands. Watching my wife trim the finger-nails off prior to cooking, is more than I can stand...
Wow. The ultimate Kitchen Nightmare.
You’re makin’ me hungry! I love good chicken feet as Dim Sum!
One fom column A and one from column B; plus, you get eggrolls.
Yet another reason why it’s insane to import food products from China.
