VIDEO: Ex-Jersey girl giggles as she hires 'hitman' to kill husband rather than deal with divorce

A Michigan state police detective videotapes a smiling Julia Merfeld talking about how she doesn't want to break her spouse's heart and wants the death be 'painless.'

An ex-Jersey girl, stuck in a failing marriage, opted for a paid killer over a divorce lawyer.

A smiling and giggly Julia Merfeld was captured on videotape in a pair of conversations where she hired a hitman — who was actually a Michigan state police detective.

"Terrible as it sounds, it was easier than divorcing him," the cold-blooded former Keyport, N.J., resident told the "killer" about her lethal choice.

"I didn't have to worry about the judgment of my family. I didn't have to worry about breaking his heart," she continued. "It's going to break my heart when it happens, but it's something that I've been thinking about for a while."

Merfeld, 21, pleaded guilty last month to solicitation for murder — agreeing to pay $50,000 to the killer out of her 27-year-old husband's $400,000 life insurance policy.

The couple, who have two children, had recently moved to Michigan after the husband's job transfer.

Video captured both meetings between the murderous spouse and the phony hitman. In the first, she climbs into his car as "California Girls" plays on the radio — and quickly gets down to business. How does she want it done?

"Really whatever's easiest," the giggly Merfeld says. "If you can get him outside, that would be great. But it you absolutely can't, I'll understand. 'Cause it would be messy in the house."

Merfeld says killing her hubby in the great outdoors was a preference because she had a girlfriend lined up to move in — and she didn't want her new roomie to get spooked and bail.

Merfeld wears a Batman sweatshirt to the second meeting, where she pays a $100 retainer and presents the "hitman" with hand-drawn floor plans of their home and a photo of her spouse.

"I don't want an open casket," she declares firmly. "The most painless way you can possibly do it. I don't care about anything else. Just make it painless."

The detective finally explains how he plans to handle the killing. "I'm just gonna take him head on there, and I'm gonna shoot him right in the face," he says. "I'm gonna put a couple rounds in his noggin." "OK," Merfeld replies.

The tapes were released to Michigan media outlets following Merfeld's guilty plea. She faces a minimum of six years in prison at her July 30 sentencing. Before climbing out of the detective's car, the unhappy wife offered a handshake and a smile to the killer.

"Thank you," she said. "Good luck to you."

I guess they call her that because the family moved to Michigan. But they are wrong, apparently, you can take the girl out of Jersey, but...

If the hitman requires a retainer, chances are, he's a cop.

Six years?????

According to the article, six years is the minimum. Also, the law ranks a successful murder as more serious than an attempted murder; an attempted murder as more serious than a conspiracy to commit murder; and a conspiracy to commit murder as more serious than a solicitation to commit murder. (There was no conspiracy here because the "hitman" wasn't really a hitman and thus there was no actual agreement between two people to commit a crime. So all you had was a "solicitation"-- asking someone to commit a crime.)

The judge wanted to give her the maximum, which seems to be 7 years to life.

Her husband, the target, asked the court to sentence her to time served (which is a few weeks I believe).

The judge said that he would change it to six years from seven in deference to the victim's plea for leniency.

Well, he’s trying to get her out of jail, so maybe she will eventually finish the job.
