Free Republic | July 12, 2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 07/12/2013 1:19:48 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Hope you get a just right amount of rain.

I would dig up a few and put them in pots under a makeshift lean to, or bring them indoors, just to get a few at least.

That’s what I did last year to Hubby’s tomatoes and peppers after we decided to let the garden burn up due to lack of water.

We had some good fresh produce from those.

Maybe you can post some pictures when things get going.

Yep - that’s what I thought. My mel’s mix has done better in subsequent years with growing winter rye or wheat and turning under as well as adding plenty of compost each year.

It might be worth a try to add some more compost as a side dressing, maybe even some bone meal, blood meal, and throw on a few banana peels and crushed egg shells.

Have you tried any water soluable fertilizers?

Well, we did this by accident you might say. The copper tubing stopped up and was not able to get it unstopped, so we put a gizmo on it that drains it to a 5 gallon bucket which we change out Morning and evening.

I’d like to figure out a way to run it to the outside and hook it to a drip hose, but Hubby has no desire to do it, and he is the one who has to carry it out daily.

All these laws that have passed, all the education and shaming people into walking on eggs around minorities- being so politically correct that I have been called racist for calling citizens of Mexico Mexicans... It has all led us to this, we are and need to be afraid of black people that we don’t know. That is outrageous! I know many fine black people that will have nothing to do with this sort of thing. Yet rabble rousers that are supposed to be respected leaders of the black community have lead them instead to hate whites and be more racist than anyone.

Any jury verdict is never a sure thing and justice is not always found in a court room no matter what color you are- no one has proved to me that race had any part in what happened. It is insane for people to stir this pot in the name of racism- against whites!!

My husband has about every spice in the world, and uses them. He grows herbs and peppers, and uses them.

The way I spice things - other than salt and pepper - is to smell the dish as I put it together, them sniff at the various spice and herb bottles. When I find one that “sniffs compatible” I try it out. Start with a little bit, then adjust.

Probably sounds weird, but it works. I don’t care for the way a lot of dishes are spiced up these days. Too much going on. My husband will over spice stuff so that I can’t even eat it - yet he loves it.

And bacon grease is one of the best flavor enhancers going. I taught my sons about that, and they are enthusiastic bacon grease people.

These are the new, fresh “medicines” I just got for various physical problems if the SHTF - they are all organic. I’ll know what to use to fix a medical problem but not really know about using them in food (except for garlic powder and cinnamon). These are strictly for medicinal use. I’d buy others for food but I have a good deal of French blend, Italian blend, Pinto Bean Seasoning and Mexican blend for food. Here are the medicines:

Garlic Powder
Paprika
Turmeric
Oregano
Cayenne Pepper
Basil Leaves
Ginger
Parsley
Ceylon Cinnamon

I think I am going to turn it over, add some compost and try again. Sad thing is everything is growing so nice, if only it would bear veggies.

Maybe add a few different kinds of compost.

Task: Given a junked leafblower, a coffee maker with no pot, an old stainless steel pan, and a variac autotransformer from the 1960s, build a slam type sheller that will work with sunflower seeds, peanuts and dried beans.

Will a leaky 40 cup percolator-type coffee urn do, or does it need to be one of the Mr. Coffee types? I'll be watching for the pictures when you post them.

What kind of veggie dryer do you have? I’m looking for a good one, a bit pricy, but not expensive.

I don't know what we get from the A/C but it does run onto the yard. We have some gray water running out but I've never seen it do any good.

In 2011, Texas endured the worst single-year drought in its history. - http://stateimpact.npr.org/texas/drought/

Texas is now in its third year of drought... In many rural areas, farm and pastureland soils are dry, and grasshoppers, which eat crops, have become a problem. (The insects’ populations increase during droughts because the fungus that naturally limits their growth does not grow without moisture—although an extreme drought can prevent grasshopper eggs from hatching.)

http://stateimpact.npr.org/texas/2013/07/12/where-we-stand-the-texas-drought/

Earlier in the spring, we had a couple of gully washing downpours but not enough to help. At least we're not NM.

I have fungus all over my lawn. I no longer can grow any plants in the back because of the uncontrolled deer population that is not controlled. I enjoy reading all of everyone’s post. I have just lived and learned. I have given up. Buy mine at the store or farmers market....and fantasize.

Smack their vines gently, like tomatoes, green peppers, it sends some kind of veggie message, I don’t understand it, but I’ll try it. Tomorrow, I’m gently smacking my tomatoe plants with a feathered thingy, and trip some of the green stuff then taking off the top.

He was in south Chicago, doubt if there was a tomatillo plant around for miles. He was just an amazing gardener, he really has a green thumb. I went out after I wrote you and stopped at the 2 places in our small town that might have them, all out of veggies now, only flower plants left. Oh well, maybe I’ll get a few. Would a paintbrush work to self pollinate??
