An old Washington joke goes that an employee of the Department of Agriculture sees a colleague sobbing and rushes to ask what's wrong? The man replies, "My farmer died." So it goes with this week's House rebellion on the farm bill, which has Democrats wailing in protest. Their latest vehicle for subsidies and food stamps died.
House Republicans passed an historic farm bill on Thursday that for the first time in about 40 years separates food stamps from farm policy. This bids to divide what has been a political alliance of urban Democrats and farm-state Republicans that has bloated the budgets of both programs for decades.
This also explains the howls from Democrats, all of whom voted against the measure. Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was visibly irate as she accused Republicans of taking "food out of the mouths of babies and you prevent a bill from going forward that addresses our food banks and our nutrition needs and the rest for our country, what are you thinking?" Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut chimed in that "a vote for this bill is a vote to end nutrition in America." Who writes this melodrama?
Ms. Pelosi's anger must be especially amusing to House Speaker John Boehner, because the Democratic leader helped to defeat the original $1 trillion version of the farm bill last month. That version included some $740 billion for food stamps, but Democrats opted to kill it because they wanted even more money for a program whose cost more than doubled from 2008 to 2012. They objected to a modest GOP proposal to allow states to adopt pilot work requirements for able-bodied food-stamp recipients.

The reason that liberals are so afraid of work requirements in food stamp programs is that many recipients are children of illegals and if these requirements go into place then states will finally be able to say just how many illegals are getting taxpayer funded benefits.
The most frequent liberal lie about illegals being hard workers that would benefit us via amnesty would be uncovered.

PUT ME IN CHARGE . . .
Put me in charge of food stamps. I'd get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho's, just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away. If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a job.
Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I'd do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations. Then, we'll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine. If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, or smoke, then get a job.
Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks? You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your home" will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried. If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a job and your own place.
In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a "government" job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you. We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the "common good.."
Before you write that I've violated someone's rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules. Before you say that this would be "demeaning" and ruin their "self esteem," consider that it wasn't that long ago that taking someone else's money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem.
If we are expected to pay for other people's mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices.
AND While you are on Gov't subsistence, you no longer can VOTE! Yes, that is correct. For you to vote would be a conflict of interest. You will voluntarily remove yourself from voting while you are receiving a Gov't welfare check. If you want to vote, then get a job."
Work requirements would also cause oroblems for those who work off the books so that they can claim welfare benefits like food stamps. They’ll have to choose between their job for walking around money or their government “job” to get welfare.

I found it quite interesting too, which is why I posted it.
I also find it to be a tiny ray of sunshine. The people on Capitol Hill are FINALLY starting to approach and think about Agriculture in a way they think about every other thing up their, which is with their heads. Up until now, they just rubber stamped whatever Agriculture bill came to them. In other words, they approached Agriculture with their hearts, trying to keep all the family farmers from being made extinct by the big super agriculture corporations, no matter how many obsolete 1930’s Soviet style Agriculture programs they kept alive year after year. But now, thanks to the Tea Party Movement, and the current financial crunch, they are finally open to modern day approaches to Agriculture.
