The introduction to "The Faber Book of Utopias," edited by John Carey, chronicles the methods of creating ideal citizens, which historically have been repeatedly promoted by utopian philosophers via the deconstruction or abolition of the family. Originally proposed by Plato in his magnum opus, "The Republic," this simple yet dramatic blueprint has influenced a number of social philosophers as diverse as More, Hobbes, Voltaire, Rousseau, to Darwin, Marx, Nietzsche, Weber, Freud, B.F. Skinner, to socialist, liberal, progressive thinkers and politicians in modern times. Plato promoted the belief that the family should be completely deconstructed and its component parts used as tools of an omnipotent, leviathan state. This means that children will be taken from parents practically from birth, preventing the parent/child bonding. Children will be raised exclusively by state bureaucrats; the unfit, mentally feeble, undesirables like their fellow Greeks (Spartans) and in modern times under Hitler and the Nazis, summarily aborted.

Plato promoted the belief that the family should be completely deconstructed and its component parts used as tools of an omnipotent, leviathan state. Problem is, the family is the basic unit of society, and thus societies like this one proposed by Plato cannot exist without falling into chaos.
Plato’s Utopia was satire. He was too smart to really believe that crap. Over time, the Sophists (akin to modern day liberals) removed the “sarcasm tag” and presented it as his real view.

“Problem is, the family is the basic unit of society, and thus societies like this one proposed by Plato cannot exist without falling into chaos.”
Chaos is what they want. To then be replaced by the “benevolent, all-powerful state.”
That’s why it’s so hard to satirize liberals. Just when you think they won’t cross some absurd line, they do(e.g., the current movement to legally redefine marriage).
As with his successors like Voltaire and Marx, Plato was never in a position to put the imaginings of his mind into practice with nasty imperfect humans. That was done later by ego maniacal psychopaths such as Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler with the destruction of millions as the tragic result. Obama and his cohorts imagine themselves in that company and it will take some effort and actions by good men and women to keep them from achieving similar results.
Whether Plato really believed his system would work or was just using it as a theoretical ideal is up to interpretation.
Sterngberg in 2009 dealt with Progressive Purification, which as you suggest will be focused in no small measures on “non-producers”...a pdf file:

They pulled the file, darn. But thanks for the link anyway.
If this article is correct, in the end, the Progressives will execute everyone on welfare or disability.

But that’s their current base!! The progressives couldn’t undertake that action until they have eliminated competitive voting and the Republic.
I used to be a Democrat, so I have some experience with how they think. Eventually, many of them realize that what they want is impossible with the present realities. Some of them become very bitter and decide that if they can’t have a utopian world or nation, then they will make sure their family members and friends are well taken-care of. This is most of the present Democrat party leaders. Some decide that their ideas must be forced on others. Those people always come to the same conclusion......there are too many people. They know all the ways to reduce the human population. They are quite insane. These two groups struggle for control of the Democrat party. The “take care of my own” Democrats are presently in power. They do enough to appease their insane eugenics rivals. Each side thinks they are using the other side, and I guess they are.
