Meet The Men And Women Are Willing To Die On Mars
Business Insider ^ | 08/14/2013 | Dina Spector

Posted on 08/15/2013 8:26:14 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

100,000 people want to live in these space habitats on Mars — for eternity.

Four months after the call for applicants went out, 100,000 people from around the world (including yours truly) have applied for a one-way trip to Mars.

The Mars One group wants to put four humans on the Red Planet by 2022. The first settlers would by followed more groups, arriving every two years.

The first round of a four-part selection process ends on August 31. By September, the selection committee will begin culling through hundreds of thousands of video entries and questionnaires to decide which space enthusiasts will move ahead to Round Two. Ultimately, candidates will be whittled down to a total of 24 to 40 applicants, divided into groups.

"We are selecting groups of four, and not individuals," says Norbert Kraft, the medical director for the Mars One project. "You can be the best, smartest individual, but if you cannot work within your group you are out," he said.

Each group will spend three months every year, for up to eight years, in an isolated habitat. During this time, the group will have to prove that they can work together.

On its press site, Mars One says its looking for applicants that display five specific psychological traits: resilience, adaptability, curiosity, the ability to trust others, and creativity/resourcefulness. They also want candidates who are mature, interesting, and have a sense of humor.

Most Mars applicants have a public profile and their application videos are available to watch online.

I thought he found what he was looking for...

So, where does Mr. de Leon live today?

Honestly, I can’t see this colony ending well.

I think that they need to do the following mental health test for applicants:

If you apply, you’re disqualified on the grounds that you have a mental disorder.

I think we’ve all met this person in our lives, especially at work. Anyone read or skimmed a book from one of those person manning the science dome in Antartica (it was the lady who suffered a life-threatening condition and had to be evac’d by plane), it will give you a glimpse of what happens where you are isolated from a population for 6 months.

I probably should expand on my premise.

There should be a nomination process, and only I get to make the nominations. Then, I'll send those I nominate to Mars. For Life. hee hee hee.

I'll gladly take input from my fellow FReepers.

Derek Zoolander: How can we be expected to teach children to learn how to read... if they can't even fit inside the building?

Derek Zoolander: I don't wanna hear your excuses! The building has to be at least... three times bigger than this!

My husband would go in a heart beat just to be part of the scientific community.
He was very disappointed that he did not meet the age qualifiers for the trip but he did meet the scientific areas.

Not necessarily, unless you consider scientist and explores mental. My husband would go just to be part of the scientific discovery.

I can understand being willing to give your life for science. Really I can. But clearly, living one's entire life in the limited social and physical environment contemplated in the article would be a guarantee of some type of debilitating mental breakdown in the end.

Human nature can only be suppressed for so long, and there is nothing about this living environment that would be consistent with human nature over a lifetime.

And by the way, would you stay married to your husband if he were selected for this trip?

Of course I would stay married to my husband.

My husband’s career in the scientific field has been all these years quite isolated (well while at work anyway), scientists are a strange bunch.

However, I do get your point, a person can not work 24/7, we need a respite from the work.
