WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD
Free Republic | 8/16/2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 08/16/2013 12:42:15 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

I know...I was just ‘clowning’ around...’clowning’...is that still legal?

Oh, boy! I picked a cucumber today that looks like a watermelon.

Anyone know why corn would simply stop growing. I have about 16 stalks and they all grew nicely till about two weeks ago. They have ears. Then, they just stopped. I haven’t opened up any of the ears but I am assuming they are going to rot.

We got 1/2” of rain from that. We both slept through it. Wife was home today, we had a rough night and spent the morning at the hospital, came home and both died in the bed about 2:30 till about 6:30. Heard it raining but never knew anything else about a storm. I love it when God waters the flowers for us. Don’t love hail though. Glad wife was here today and not driving I-45 through that this afternoon. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Yeh, they graft it onto a more hardy root stock if I understand it correctly. Keep us posted if/when you try it.

Well they should have tassels on the stalks, and silks at the top end of the ears. The tassels will shed onto the silks to fertilize and fill out the corn.

The corn I have planted does not grow much taller if any after the ears get started, I just assumed that the energy goes into production of the ear rather than stalks.

Are the stalks a lot shorter than the package description? I wouldn’t assume that the corn has failed just yet. I would side dress with compost or fertilizer, and make sure to keep it watered well.

If you think it’s finished, check out one of the ears to see if it is filled out.

That is correct...if left to grow on their own, the root stocks produce tomatoes that are essentially inedible. I can't see why you wouldn't be able to save the seeds, since the scion is just a standard heirloom variety.

My corn is doing fine, other than the squirrels feasting on it. Tomatoes are finally kicking in. White eggplant is going gangbusters. Jalepenos and serranoes doing good, habeneros and sweet peppers ain’t doing squat - strange. Summer squash in a lull. Green beans doing well. Tomatillos just starting to be ready. Cukes died off. Winter squash should be a bumper crop. The bok choy I planted last week germinated really well. Three nice pumpkins growing from the volunteer in the compost bin.

It is about the time that corn would stop getting taller. As long as your plants are five to nine feet tall, depending upon the variety (early corn tends to be shorter, silver queen gets really tall), it is done growing. The important thing is to have enough rows (at least four) or hills so that it pollenates well.

And corn also is a very heavy feeder, needs a lot of nitrogen.

Will it keep me away too?? :-)

BTW, about 15 years ago, we had a red fox and her kits living under my neighbors shed. No squirrels, bunnies, or other varmints around that year. Couldn’t figure out where all the squirrels were going till the neighbor saw the mother fox taking a fresh killed one back under the shed.

“The Sesame didn’t come up.”

Maybe you were too nice to it. It was hot, so I stuck the seed or seeds in the dirt a bit, pushed some dirt over it/them, poured water around it and went back in the cool house and didn’t look again until it was over the top of the pot and I saw green leaves. I remember squirting water in it with the hose when I was watering tomatoes but it wasn’t where I could see it (I was on the deck not back in the garden) so I figured I was watering nothing.

I still have this problem of seeing in my mind a plant will grow from a freaking seed. I am stunned when a plant comes out of that seed.

Have you built a coffee pot today - you better have. I need to send you a Melitta plastic filter and some paper filters so all you have to do is heat water and have a cup of very good coffee as the hot water passes through the coffee one time and you get coffee flavor - no boiling of the coffee or sitting until it’s bitter.

I suppose you were born at some time so you have to have a birthday - do you have any idea when it is? Could send you the filter for birthday present. You’re about 90 yrs. old, aren’t you?

I have a working coffee pot now. Sort of a Frankenstein, but it works. It's artistic. ;)

I don't have a birthday anymore. Mine was confiscated for being incorrigible.

“Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow.”

I’m just going to load up a Mortgage Lifter tomato plant for you and the barrel and click in your address on the GPS, already loaded your address in there, and go where the GPS man says. If he gets me lost, I have your phone numbers in my cell phone. You are only about 9 miles from me. I’ll be the woman with the sexy blond hair and pink blouse and tan pants. :o)

I wish all the rest of you on this thread could be there. Wouldn’t we all have a blast together?

Since the garden ping list is about the closest group of friends of any ping list on here, an annual meeting somewhere would be a good get together, somewhere centrally located in the off season. Just one of the two thoughts rolling around in my near empty noggin. I forget what the other was.

Benderville set an record high temp of 74 on Wednesday and another record of 73 yesterday but we still have to buy our tomatoes at the Farmer's Market where a inland grower was offering this nice variety of Heirloom Tomatoes at the Market yesterday
