How atheists became the most colossally smug and annoying people on the planet

When did atheists become so teeth-gratingly annoying? Surely non-believers in God weren't always the colossal pains in the collective backside that they are today? Surely there was a time when you could say to someone "I am an atheist" without them instantly assuming you were a smug, self-righteous loather of dumb hicks given to making pseudo-clever statements like, "Well, Leviticus also frowns upon having unkempt hair, did you know that?" Things are now so bad that I tend to keep my atheism to myself, and instead mumble something about being a very lapsed Catholic if I'm put on the spot, for fear that uttering the A-word will make people think I'm a Dawkins drone with a mammoth superiority complex and a hives-like allergy to nurses wearing crucifixes.

Obama certainly doesn’t believe in the sanctity of life. Charles Krauthammer said he voted against a ban on partial birth abortion three times. By the by, I recently asked an MD friend of mine if he had ever run across anyone in medical school who was going to specialize in abortion? He said, “Are you kidding?” He said that this was regarded as being ghoulish. It’s the losers who end up in the abortion mills. They need the money.

I have met smug people of every belief and faith system. Smug Muslims, VERY smug Buddhists, and yes smug atheists.

It’s not the smugness that bothers me, but the abject hatred of those with a different viewpoint held by the so-called ‘new atheists’. They are markedly divergent from the atheists of the past (less intellectually honest, more prone to philosophical laziness). The real problem is that all their role-models are d9cks, so they tend to be d9cks. A shame, because there are some very respectful atheistic scholars out there, but Dawkins gets all the press.

The most annoying aspect is of course the need to remove any religion from view as if it causes emotional trauma when they see it. I am a Christian, but I have no problem if someone wants a Ganesh statue atop their grave. I have found many atheists to be the least tolerant people I’ve met, and I use the word ‘tolerance’ in its true sense of being respectful toward those who peacefully disagree.

An interesting article by an atheist who takes the ‘dawkinites’ to task. Alternate title, how to be an atheist and not be boorish about it.

“(for example that came up with plate tectonics was originally laughed out of his field, not to mention the guy who figured out ulcers were caused by bacteria was mocked for years)”

I heard a story once of how the term ‘Big Bang’ had come to be used. It was actually a mocking term invented by some atheistic science big wig who hated the theory. Atheists at the time were desperate to prove that the universe had existed infinitely in the past, to help their case. Eventually of course, the theory came to be the mainstream view, and I believe the guy ended up committing suicide. Sad story.

“Actually, need to be a little more specific...when he denigrates religion, he denigrates christian religion, never a word about islam, or budha, or any other religion.”

Very typical, and a little annoying as other ‘religions’ have many more obvious logical flaws than Christianity.

The overlap between atheists and prius drivers is probably pretty substantial.

Funny, I do not think atheists are smug at all, they are simply terrified.

I kinda' like 'em.

They don't come around knocking on your door trying to hand you some bizarre literature.

The atheists the writer refers to are the ones who ostentatiously and obnoxiously make themselves known. Many are not true atheists but rather believers who hate the God they nervously believe exists but Who does not promote the appropriate subjects. They actually believe that God shouldn't exist. The actual nonbeliever doesn't much care what believers believe because he himself believes that belief is irrelevant unless the rulers of society require him to believe.

Many of the in-your-face atheists base their entire identity on atheism and on everyone else knowing that they are atheists and in trying to force all others to be atheists, sort of like militant homosexuals. Both groups appear to be totally obnoxious to non nonbelievers because the obnoxious ones are the examples that make themselves know.

Nothing wrong with a bit of bizarre literature. I get a mailbox full of bizarre literature from my local homeowner’s association. Apparently failing to mow your lawn every weekend no exceptions is a ‘blight on humanity’.

It is worth remembering that atheism in all of its dictrinaire political manifestations killed 100 million people in the 20th century.

How many people did the Spanish Inquisition kill?

It’s the social media. A whole lot of social media is dedicated to be an @#$#$%^ version of your particular group.

Or the Internet generally.

After WWII there was a feeling that in some sense irreligion had "failed," that without God or gods to restrain people, men would become beasts, so atheists were more modest.

That age is over. The feeling has died out. So atheists can be smug again. A lot of people prefer the word "agnostic" just to indicate that they aren't going to go on the offensive against the beliefs of others.

Apparently, there are various denominations in atheism, and they don’t like each other.

it is logically impossible for there to be a god,

That is true if you only accept God because of proof. Christians accept God because of their faith are not searching for proof.

If you seek proof of a God occupying space in the heavens somewhere, you are looking in the wrong place.

There would be little point in explaining why a Christian acts on his beliefs through faith but this short video may help you to understand where God resides

This doesn't mean you should adopt these beliefs but at least you will be a little better informed.

God doesn't believe in atheist

I love talking to atheists .... I just ask them when they shake their fist at the sky or smash their thumb with a hammer or stub their little toe.... Who exactly are they taking too....?

Really, really pisses them off....

"Actually, need to be a little more specific...when he denigrates religion, he denigrates christian religion, never a word about islam, or budha, or any other religion."

The funny thing is, people like your nephew don't realize that they're proving the truth of Christianity by their very actions. Jesus said it would be this way.

I don’t shake my fist at the sky, for self inflicted wounds the anger is usually directed at myself.

Apparently, there are various denominations in atheism, and they don’t like each other.

Five deities that I know : Obama, Nature, Race, Academia, and the Media. Nothing of these five can be questioned and their truths are just that - the truths they hold self evident.
