All 25,000 individuals who applied to the University of Liberia were forced to swallow their pride: none of them passed the entrance exam, forcing the admissions office to lower its selection standards.
Liberia is recovering from a violent civil war that came to an end a decade ago, but left its education system in a mess, as President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf recently said.
According to the news site allafrica.com, the University of Liberia had decided to raise its admission standards for the 2013-2014 academic year. Any student seeking a spot at the university needed to score higher than 50% on the math section and 70% on the English section, as opposed to 33% and 49% the previous year (when 7,500 students were admitted).

Umm...I've been there. I was there when the war launched. That war ended over 10 years ago. Billions of dollars received in foreign aid subsidies since then, from many nations. I see our foreign aid package included our approach to educational standards . Of course, nobody would think to give it another try next year, or bone up with remedial courses focusing on the entrance requirements, any number of alternatives, or simply ask "WHERE DID ALL THAT MONEY GO TO?" Nope the standards were just too high.

Actually it seems as if Liberia is actually trying to ENFORCE some standards.
That puts them light years ahead of us.

They are not going to now, not after the universal failure rate.

Math:
1: calculate the last digit of pi.
2: list all the prime numbers.
Physics:
1: Define the universe and give three examples.
2: Take the live cat from underneath your chair. In the next 60 seconds use it to demonstrate the superposition of quantum states. The proctor will be observing your actions.
Literature:
1: Perform an act from Shakespeare's play Cardenio. Compare and contrast it to Homer's poem Nostoi.
Veterinary Science:
1: under your chair you may or may not find a cat suffering from quantum superposition. Cure it.
