MY 9MM Every Day Carry AMMO [video only]

Outline of the criteria that I use for selecting my carry ammo, and presenting some choices that I considerable viable for carry in my chosen platform. I've had this question so often, it was time to make a video on the topic. I've been shooting 9mm on a regular basis since the late 90's, so my research into this began at that time. Obviously, technology has changed quite a bit. There is a ton of useful information online, but having the ability to run ammo tests in the backyard has certainly helped to confirm (or not) my research over the years.

I have that in my 1911 (took them a while to get round to a 45 ACP...they started with the smaller rounds)...

I mix ammo in my mags. 3 hydra shocks then 3 FMJ. 15 rounds for my 92FS.

Just some old time experience to add to this.
I preferred .45acp for most work for many years. However there were some instances where 9mm was the ammo required.
The reasons do not matter, but that was the way it was.
In these cases, I used a 9mm Hi Power and the 9mm round C9BP..it worked. Availability was very good both domestically and over seas.

Mixing ammo is okay, but the backup mag(s) should be ball ammo, since they are with you incase of a serious firefight. The first few rounds out of my Bersa Thunder 9 Ultra Compact are hollow points for close-in max damage, quickly. All the rounds in the 16 round backup mags are ball ammo, one of 147 grain and one of 115 grain.

This looks like it would be a superb self defense round - if you can find it.

The zombie ammo (z-max) is the basically the same thing as the V-Max.

Waste of good money. Buy the Barnaul hollow point ammo for your AR15 and know that the bad guys are not going to know the difference when hit with either bullet. I shoot piston guns and the Russian HP steel ammo runs fine in them. Chamber brush with CLP after a couple thousand rounds and it’s good to go another 2000 or 5000 rounds.

Careful with varmint grenades and other such fragmenting loads for self defense. They are designed to basically explode, ie, violently fragment on contact so you won’t get much penetration.

Cheap ammo is fine for everyday shooting, but the expansion on that TSX bullet is nothing short of amazing. If you’re using an AR for your only home defense weapon, as opposed to a shotgun, I’d probably want to have a magazine or two of that stuff loaded up to use in the event of a home invasion.

Your piston gun is not going to get fouled up as much using the cheap ammo either.

I just watched the ballistic gel test of that bullet. Wow, that expansion cavity is going to ruin internal organs if the round enters anywhere in the torso, from adams apple to groin! One shot drop with that baby.

There’s something to be said for fragmenting. Though there’s something to be said for penetrating too. Unless they’re wearing BPVs, I wouldn’t want too much penetration. The ability of the old M193 ball round to inflict devastating injuries was due to it’s fragmentability at high velocity. It was actually considered “inhumane”. The heavier SS109 projectile fired from the M855 ball round also fragments but it loses its ability to fragment after it hits about 2,700 fps making it particularly unsuited for carbine length rifles out beyond 70-100 yards. The varmint grenade, on the other hand, fragments at much lower velocities which A.) makes it unlikely to go through the perp where it can hurt an innocent bystander/family member and B.)extends the range at which fragmentation can occur. Magazines can be filled with different ammo for different purposes too incidentally. My $.02 worth there.

Worth thinking about. I would be interested in seeing some ballistic gelatin tests to see how much penetration you get when fired in the 5 - 25 yd range.

A soft point is another good option as they will actually mushroom.
