California university now teaching zombie survival online

UC Irvine has just announced that it will be extending its studies of the human condition into the undead. By partnering with online learning platform Canvas and AMC, UC Irvine has created a class called "Society, Science, Survival: Lessons from AMC's The Walking Dead."

The course, while clearly a bit of a gimmick, will cover a wide range of topics pertinent to surviving a zombie apocalypse. By enrolling, you'll be signing up to learn about subjects from "Nutrition in a post-apocalyptic world — are squirrels really good for you?" to "The spread of infectious disease and population modeling — swarm!"

On top of all the learning and fun that the course description offers up, the class is being offered free. AMC has also taken a look at the syllabus, which means classes will be teaching lessons pertinent to next season's episodes as they air. So if you've got a hankerin' for a hunk o' learning-based spoilers, head on over to the course's enrollment page and sign up.

I don't need it either, I have this...

I have a buddy with one of those (I assume a S&W .50) I wouldn't want to face a couple dozen Zeds with that thing. Maybe a grizzly, but that bastard will wear your hand out in a hurry!

“..[S&W 500 revolver]”

Overkill. It’ll just attract them.

A 22lr Ruger 10-22 is a much better choice. Ammo is far cheaper and abounds. And only CNS hits count.

I’ll take my chances with the 500. I’ve seen the damage it’ll do. And yes...it does have quite a kick.

“...I’ll take my chances with the 500.”

To neutralize a zombie one only needs to disrupt the cranial vault, not spray contagion everywhere when you bust open the head at close range with your hand cannon.

Here’s what’s wrong with the 500 for zombie use:

- the revolver weighs 72.5 oz (4.5 pounds) empty

- cylinder limited to 5 rounds

- ammo costs $1.70 per round, if you can find it

- short sight radius requiring optics or close range

- overly powerful, spraying zombie contagion and placing shooter and others at risk

One must choose the right tools for the job. A 22lr semi-auto carbine will get the job done. Longer sight radius means longer range and more effective shot placement. 22lr chambering means abundant and inexpensive ammo (5 cents a round or less). Reloading is fast and you have the choice of 10-round factory or higher cap magazines. And the rifle only weighs marginally more that the 500.

Oh, don’t forget to bring your hearing protection. Unloading the 500 in a confined space will rupture your ear drums and disable you.

The 500 is suitable for large, dangerous game for the handgun hunter. For the zombie slayer varmint tools are called for.

“Either way, the zombies get ya!!”

They’d be the only women who would.

I’m in my Sixties, and even the zombies have more get-up-and-go and oomph than I do.

I don’t take “zombie slaying” seriously...especially since there aren’t any. I just like talking about my 500.

I hear you. I love all my S&W revolvers, especially the model 29 6.5” in 44mag.

The subject matter hook is silly and gimmicky, of course, but at its heart, isn’t it really just teaching basic survival techniques in a disaster-style situation?

Hey DogByte6RER, I want to read the article. Your link doesn’t go to it. Can you fix that?

Nevermind, I was following a thread on something else and thought your article was posted today instead of 2+ years ago.
