Around 50 protesters dressed in wetsuits, backed by 1,000 supporters, managed to hold up the cruise ships by over an hour as they paddled in the canal some armed with inflatable rings. The protest was timed to coincide with a busy day on the canal, as a scheduling quirk meant 12 cruise ships were due to head past St Mark's Square well above the daily average of two ships. "The demonstration was a great success and we now hope the government will take advantage of this momentum and kick the cruise ships out of the Venice lagoon," said Silvio Testa, a spokesman for the protesters.

the world continues to get wackier by the day!
Cruise Ship Amnesty Now!
I can’t imagine entering that water after seeing the things floating in it and understanding the local sewage process.
Those cruise ships keep the Venetian economy afloat.
the protestors likely havent a clue about the economic benefits.
in real estate it’s location,..location,..location,..
in the world of Protest its

I agree. They are hideous.
.
I’ve been to Venice, what kind of cruise ship fits into those canals?
Run ‘em over, chopping them up with those big screws. All astern, all ahead and repeat. Make fish food.
>>I do find the cruise ships to be an awful visual blight<<
I too much prefer to see old freighters and rusty tankers slowly chugging into the harbor.
No doubt they had some environmental concern. Ironically it caused them to sit their burning even more oil while they were removed from the canal.
They can’t vote in Venice?
Agreed.
Big ones sail the Grand Canal,, we were on the Grand Princess two years ago,, at that time, it sounded like they only rarely let a large ship thru, now it sounds like the rage..
IT is a quite a sighht..
Venice is an architect’s paradise: every street (actually cobblestone sidewalks bordered by canals - no vehicles allowed in the city) looks as though it was purposely built for the view; so I can imagine how these big boats would block the canal scene across St. Mark’s and spoil the medieval character of the town. It’s also hard to imagine you could stuff anymore tourists into that place. Thirty years ago buses parked at the edge of town and everyone had to walk into the city center, unless you took a water taxi. With these things the place must be so stuffed with people you must walk lockstep as if sardines in a can. Ugh!
These huge cruise ships bring thousands of tourists on each one. It's revenue for docking, tour companies, cabs, stuff cruisers buy. But it's insane for the people who live there. Handling thousands of people for a few hours is a logistical nightmare, and there has to be constant vigilence to keep tourists safe. I don't blame residents for getting fed up with the disruption.
