Chocolate - get it while you can!!

Posted on 09/25/2013 4:13:43 AM PDT by djf

Reports coming in of a very, very bad cocoa bean harvest in Africa, and many cocoa farmers abandoning it for more profitable crops.

I started researching it a bit after passing the Lindt bars at my local store - up to almost 5 dollars for the 75% cacao. Managed to snag four bars at a large outlet store for half that.

The articles I've read say you should expect dark chocolate to go up to six dollars a pound or more...

Hey, life is rough. But it's even worse without chocolate!

Good thing I have a good stash in the freezer. Chocolate has its own section.

I have about 5 lbs of the Lindt and a mix of other brands stashed.
All dark. No milk chocolate.

The recommendations I see always say to NEVER freeze chocolate. It makes the oils and fats separate.
I dunno if it’s true, because mine is stored in the wrappers in a small metal crate, in a part of my house that stays pretty cool.

As long as the government keeps my increase in ration to 25 grams a week, I don’t care how much it costs.

I vacuum seal dark chocolate only in Mylar bags with O2 absorbers. I opened one 2 weeks ago that had been sealed thus since 2010. It was wonderful.

Chocolate per pound costs more than good steak per pound.

Everything is up. Reminds me of the Carter years. I’ve been warning of this since Obama got in - inflation is the sign of a Democrat president. They claim to be for the “common folk” but their policies make it so hard for business that prices rise - the ultimate tax on the poorest.

But not enough grow chocolate. It is, after all, a food staple... seriously.

If prices are that high surely someone on the planet will cultivate more. The market does work if you let it.

Great timing. My wife finally started eating dark chocolate because Dr. Oz told her so or something. It’s healthier, which is why I like it. Okay, not really. Just like it.

Well, as others have said, it might not be so bad - I remember a few years back they said the same thing about coffee. IIRC coffee prices barely budged, and then they dropped down past where they had originally been.
