Scientists wake up to meteor threat ancient Greeks knew about 2500 years ago

60 Minutes news program ran a segment entitled "Dangerous game of 'cosmic roulette'?" This segment highlighted the NASA program aimed at finding and tracking asteroids whose orbits cross Earth's thus placing them on a collision course with us. The NASA administrators at first bragged about how they knew with confidence about 95% of all the "major" threats to our planet and were currently tracking these threats. These administrators were clearly trying to convey to the public an attitude of "don't worry, we have it all under control."

Yet as with most statements by government bureaucrats the devil is in the details. The "major" threats were defined as asteroids large enough to destroy all life on Earth. Thus asteroids large enough to merely wipe out a continent and destroy "life as we know it" were simply not being tracked yet. And asteroids large enough to wipe out a major metropolitan area were also not being tracked. And meteors the size of the one that blew up over Russia earlier this year were also not being tracked. And when confronted on these facts the NASA administrators were forced to concede the point that we could get hit tomorrow by a devastating asteroid without any warning whatsoever.

Bruce. Willis.

Oh, well of course. But I meant, what can NASA do about it?

Homer had the listed cities [including the City of Pigeons?]that contributed troops and ships to the Trojan War arranged as the points of a Maltese Cross which could only be seen from space. How did he know that? Some of the cities` remains have been discovered right where Homer said they were via satellite photos...hmmmmm

Am I the only one who thought (and still thinks) that the meteor over Russia was actually part of or might have been totally in fact that asteroid that was set to make it’s closest approach to Earth ever that day?

Signs Plato though the Earth had technology countless times, only to be dust upon dust and forever lost. Makes sense. One would have to surmise, we have been here or similar to here before; countless times.

My vote is part of but do not know for certain. There are many masses of objects which do have some gravitational forces acting upon each of those objects traveling close or rather closely together. My vote is part of but still not certain. Even today scientists have difficulty describing gravity and gravitation forces in relation to space and time. Einstein may have come the closest to understanding the relationship of gravity to time and space but is still an unknown (imho), and to tell you the truth ... I’m the dumbest rock in the box.

That's what I was thinking, part of it... these things are known to break apart in orbit, but they still have basically the same trajectory, and even small gravitational forces between them can keep them together for who knows? hundreds of millions of miles, staying together for dozens of orbits, until a close encounter with a planet manages to separate them.

Anyways, it was pretty spectacular!

And it was a small!! space rock!

Have been reading reports of many brilliant observed fly ins lately. One in NY State, another out West (if am recalling correctly) Colorado and have been others have forgotten, am certain. Certainly is a lot of rock floating around out there. Am remembering something from last year regarding two objects (quite large) headed in from the southern area of sky. Have not been back to check on those objects and that report may have been a hoax. When they come in though, am agreed they are spectacular! Remember one coming in when was about nine years old and living on the East Coast. Lit up the outside as if it was day. WoW! What a rush! Was near nine p.m. but the light was, as you said spectacular from the object passing in the sky.

I don’t know, I’m trying to discover that myself. I’ve never read Plato but after a taste— I want more.

I think I’m going to start here:

These administrators were clearly trying to convey to the public an attitude of “don’t worry, we have it all under control.”

Of course they were. It’s like how they give those “in-flight safety” speeches every time you fly on an airplane. They say you can use your seat cushion in the event of a “water landing”, but there has never been a “water landing” of a jumbo jet where anyone survived to worry about drowning. It’s more to keep you from worrying than anything else.

An asteroid hitting Earth is a threat that, most likely, nobody is going to be able to predict, much less do anything about. So the best they can do is pretend like they have a plan, so we won’t worry about something out of our control.

We’re thirty thousand light years from galactic central point.
We go ‘round every two hundred million years,
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe.

We have ISON incoming. There is a possibility it is not just a single object, but could be a cloud of stuff. No doubt it’s close approach to the sun will manage to bust a few pieces lose...

And I have been trying to find orbital Java diagrams, as best as I can determine, Earth will pass DIRECTLY through it’s outgoing debris field in January.

Happy New Year!!

Have not been keeping up with ISON and was unaware. Those comets are real bruisers. The one which hit Jupiter made a hole the size of nearly Earth if not as large as Earth. Happy New Year, djf! May our homes dodge another bullet from space. Would surmise we have been extremely lucky for a long long time. Don’t know when our time will be up but it is for certain the cosmic universe holds wonders we humans will never understand and if we do ever become close to knowing or understanding anything those cosmic bullets may come in droves. The demons like throwing things ... LOL.

The only bit of luck we might have is ISON is currently North of the ecliptic plane. Soon, it will pass south of the plane. As it comes absolutely the closest to Earths orbit (Earth won't be there - yet) it will be northbound and out into almost interstellar space. That's all premised on it surviving at all!

Therefore, it might be that any objects due to hit us might be traveling in a north (somewhat - very obliquely) direction and impact in the southern hemisphere.

Well, we can hope...

I'm just hoping for a good viewing. The most excellent comet viewing ever for me was Comet Bennet in 1970.

Very accurate maps were made centuries before it was possible to see the Earth from Space. There is no mystery here.

My most recent comet viewing was about twenty years ago. May have been named HaleBop or something similar; truth is cannot remember. Think there was a cult that killed themselves that made the news with that one (HaleBop). This one (the comet) was about a million to two million miles out but was about one sixth the size of the moon when being viewed for several nights running. This comet was traveling from east to west. Spectacular and similar in size to the one which recently was viewed from Australia. Is the comet which was viewed from Australia ISON? Is your photo posted a view of ISON?

No, that’s Comet Bennet from 1969-1970

The best night viewing it, the head was right on the horizon, and the tail stretched more than halfway to the zenith! And it was quite dark that morning.

But hey, what do I know? I was just a fifteen yr old kid with a 2 1/12 inch el cheapoe refractor telescope!

Funny how some times all it takes is simple things, and yur in heaven, eh?

Thanks for posting this. I missed this when it was on TV. I am shocked that NASA etc have been basically lying for years about what exactly they are tracking. Anything that can wipe out life (or at least us) on a continent would pretty much destroy most of humanity from after effects. I guess I was under the impression they were watching more than they are. Helps to explain what happened recently when Russia got hit on same day they were paying attention to the near miss (17000 miles or whatever it was).
