Movie for a Sunday afternoon: "In Like Flint" (1967)

Today's feature is my favorite of the American made James Bond knockoff/imitation films of the 1960s. A fun spy spoof of its time but also an amazingly prophetic time capsule in the sense that its plot ideas of women running the world, nuclear weapons in outer space and most memorable of all(Flint's comment: "An actor as president?!") all came true. TV's Batgirl has a memorable cameo as a most attractive Russian ballerina named Natasha.

You don’t happen to be Austin Powers, do you? ;)

Another fun spy spoof from that time period is “Deadlier Than The Male” with Richard Johnson. I posted it a few mfasas back-

The Flint watch is a great spoof on Bond’s spy gizmos.

People these days are not so familiar with original expression that led to the title of this movie: "In like Flynn".

Cool. Drive-in or regular theater? Did it meet your expectations?

Indeed. When I first watched it on tv as a child, I had no idea what the title was supposed to mean. That’s a good link. Ironically, I think since 1967, more people are probably familiar with the term “In Like Flint” than “In Like Flynn”.

I have this on my iTunes library. Watched it as a kid back in the day.

Love his watch.
And his taste in babes.

Our Man Flint and In Like Flint along with the Matt Helm movies are some of my favorites.

Derek Flint was the ultimate ladies man.

My cell phone ringtone is the Flint phone hotline.

I remember these. Wasn’t the first one called ‘Our Man Flint’?

In the same parody genre of In Like Flint (1967), you might like to check out:

Our Man Flint (1966)

The President’s Analyst (1967) (also very prescient)

The four Dean Martin, “Matt Helm” movies,

The Silencers (1966)
Murderers’ Row (1966)
The Ambushers (1967)
The Wrecking Crew (1969)

Modesty Blaise (1966)

(The totally bizarre) Casino Royale (1967)

And, while only half-spy and half-parody, what would such a list be without the amazing:

Danger: Diabolik (1968)

Correct. Hollywood had more creativity in its titles back then. Today it would probably have been called “Our Man Flint II”.

Flint’s boss: “When do you find time to read?”
Flint: “Read? I wrote this...”

I’ve seen most of those films you’ve listed. Have you seen “Deadlier Than The Male”(1967) with Richard Johnson as Bulldog Drummond? Of all the 1960s 007 imitators, I think that one comes closest in quality to the actual James Bond films. Not surprising since it was shot at Pinewood Studios(Bond’s home studio).

I’ve got it on DVD. However, the mention of Bulldog Drummond brings to mind the hilarious stage parody of that, called Bullshot!

While they made it into a movie, Bullshot Crummond (1983), it just wasn’t as good as the video of the stage performance, which is extremely high energy and hilarious.

Here is a small section from the play.

Cool. Drive-in or regular theater? Did it meet your expectations?

I believe it was the Wardman Theater in Whittier, Calif., a walk-in theater. We never went to drive-ins. Our 1965 VW camper didn't have adequate windows for watching movies, and our other car, a 1966 VW 1600, sort of a miniature station wagon, was too cramped and uncomfortable.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed the film, as I did most of the films that I saw that year.

My most disappointing movie experience that summer was "Casino Royale," which we saw, if I remember correctly, at the Garmar Theater in Montebello. This was a comedy that featured Woody Allen as the spy James Bond. However, I thought the film was "stupid," a word I almost certainly used to describe it at the time, and that it utterly failed as a comedy.

"Casino Royale"

Stupid? You are correct sir. And most critics agreed including this one. Hollyweird laid a huge egg with that one.

Shhhh! Don’t give Hollyweird any more bad ideas than they’ve already got.

I’ve read rumors that there’s been talk of remaking “Our Man Flint” with Chris Hemsworth but hopefully that’s just a rumor. A huge part of Flint’s appeal in the first place is how he reflects the better aspects of the sixties. To update him just wouldn’t work.

Leave him in the world where Jerry Goldsmith’s jazzy lounge music plays in the background and political correctness had never even been heard of yet:
