JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Grambling canceled its football game against Jackson State after Grambling's disgruntled players refused to travel to Jackson for the game Saturday.

**SNIP**

Friday's apparent player boycott was the latest in three days of upheaval for Grambling's proud program -- which rose to prominence under coach Eddie Robinson. Several media outlets have reported that players did not attend practice on Wednesday and Thursday because of issues with program and school leadership.

Grambling (0-7) has changed coaches twice in about two months. Doug Williams was fired two games into the season and replaced by George Ragsdale, who was reassigned Thursday and replaced by Dennis "Dirt" Winston.

Jackson State spokeswoman Jean Cook said the school would still have homecoming festivities, featuring the homecoming parade, a football scrimmage and extended band performance. The school said it's working on a process to refund tickets.

Bill the Grambling players and then pull any scholarships.

I was just going to post this but I stopped to read some old articles about Grambling. Now back to the story.

First, the players should lose their scholarships. They are being compensated to practice and play and they refused.

Second, they won't lose their scholarships. The football program brings in way too much money and you can't just fire a team and start over. Ask SMU.

Players getting sh!t on and have only one real recourse, STRIKE! (insert logo of raised fist here)

In reality, these students are as close to serfs as any group these days. I have some sympathy for them.

But ya, you take the money (or scholarship) you got to work for the Man, that’s life. Hope they get it all sorted out.

I remember Williams quarterbacked for the Bucaneers back when.

The standing joke was that he'd be sent to Iran to overthrow the Ayatolah.....

What an arm. At least with the Redskins he got to the Superbowl.

Absurd dude....totally absurd.
The easiest thing in the world to do is not be a college athlete. If you don’t want the gig, don’t take it. But don’t take it and then bitch about it....

Grambling hit rock bottom years ago.

I cannot remember the last time they successfully recruited an elite player against the SEC or the ACC.

I'll guess they have maybe two or three active NFL players, none of whom went in the first or second round.

Update:

I just checked ESPN.

They have two active players.

One, a third rounder, the other, an undrafted free agent.

Grambling used to get the African American players the SEC, especially LSU, wouldn’t recruit. Now LSU gobbles up all the best talent in Louisiana of all colors, and La Monroe and La Lafayette get the rest.

Grambling is an iconic program who’s time appears to have passed....

You think Grambling football is making money now?

They might make some since game attendance is not their only source of revenue. The teams get payed to play bigger opponents and to play in big traditional money making HBCU games each year. The also make some coin through their conference.

Under Sharp’s leadership the SWAC has negotiated long-term agreements with ESPN, Russell Athletic, Toyota, Coca-Cola and Nike. The conference basketball tournament has also set records for revenue and total attendance two of the last three years.

However if you do attend a Grambling game chances are it's for the half time show.

Well, their band can’t handle the marchin’ Rattlers of Florida A&M - but I digress - and I am confident that Grambling athletics runs in the red. A lot more colleges run in the red than people realize....and if it werent’ for political correctness on the part of corporate sponsors, it would be even redder.

Possibly....they did have a radio contract some years ago - might still have it — also the Grambling-Southern game is on NBC.

It’s FCS (old I-AA), not FBS (old I-A) so the expenses aren’t as high.

But the only reason they’re not playing is that they’re 0-7?

Yes, these "students" have it so hard. It's horrible that...

...they are on a partial or full scholarship that is paying for their college education, room & board for 4+ years which could have a value of $180,000.
...their academic progress is supported with extra free tutoring if they give a damn about their education.
...their academic progress is optional or waived entirely if they don't give a damn about their education.
...they are forced to be on a premium food plan that is not available to ordinary students.
...they are receiving free athletic shoes and clothing.
...they don't get to choose the university employee supervising their team (don't they choose their own professors?).
...they are forced to ride a bus paid for by the university to an extracurricular athletic event instead of attending class.

Yep, I sure feel sorry for these oppressed individuals - serfdom, indeed.
