A 280,000% Mark Up For... Water? A Look Inside The Bottled Water Industry
ZeroHedge.com ^ | July 29, 2013 | Tyler Durden

Imagine there was a time when bottled water didn't exist in our catalog of popular commodities. Perhaps the trend started in 1976 when the chic French sparkling water, Perrier made its introduction. There it was seductively bottled in its emerald green glass amongst the era of disco and the spectacle of excesses... who could resist right?! What could be more decadent than to package, sell and consume what most consider (in the western world) a common human right easily supplied through a home faucet! It’s absurd that the cost of designer water is at a "280,000% markup" to your tap water and it's reaching record heights in consumption....

I bought some pure spring water years ago. On the back the label said....SOURCE: City of Phoenix municipal water supply.

I run my tap water through a PUR filter. My fridge has a filter in it and Sears sends a new filter every year for it.

No, I don’t trust city water.

I love that I live in a city with excellent tap water. Even unfiltered, I think it tastes better than a typical bottle of water (which I will buy occasionally, but only if I can't refill my Nalgene bottle).

By contrast, my hometown tap water was potable—barely. It is slightly yellowish (there is a visible difference in colour between the top and bottom of a Brita jug), and tastes like it was served in a dirty flowerpot.

“If your local tap water tastes horrible, like in the summer, then what else you gonna do?”

I run mine through a full coffee filter.

What gets in through those holes?

nothing...the water inside the pipe is under considerable pressure.

other than distilled water (which is self explanatory), bottled water is filtered tap water. That's it.

Yet it appears some Conservatives would like to keep us from buying something we want to buy cuz it’s GOOD!

You could get a filter for your kitchen tap and get the same result for 1% of the cost, but hey, its Colleyfornia, knock yerself out.

Tap water in Florida sucks, period.

This is true. Florida water is very hard and contains a lot of sulfur and phosphorus, and when it comes from a well direct from the ground it smells like an outhouse overflowing

So, municipal water companies cover up this funk with lots of chlorine, which makes the tap water bad tasting.

Although I will drink the tap water if necessary (it is clean), bottled water is a huge improvement...and better for cooking and cleaning

My tap water has unsafe levels of radium. It’s OK for washing, but I’m not going to ingest too much. Local store has bottled water for about 8 cents a 1/2 liter.

Name brand bottled water is definitely overpriced. Store brands and off brands are more reasonable but still more than tap water - I assume we are mostly paying for the bottles. I spend approx. $2 a week on bottled water, refilling the empties with filtered tap water until the bottles get nasty, then I pull new ones. I know I’m overpaying but it’s not breaking the bank, and the bottles are convenient for lunches and trips.

I appreciate your response.

As I have mentioned down thread, I do have a Brita filter. It’s $10.00. I did buy Rubbermaid bottles which I use. Believe me, it’s a sea of bottles and I have changed quite a few this evening. :o)

But I am away from the house about 12 hours. One hour to work, one hour home, 8 hours plus at work and then some.

Bottled water is CHEAP in California! What, do you think I’m drinking Evian, the best? No, I buy what’s on sale!!! Arrowhead is my fav. It runs about $2.49 for 24 bottles. I buy them, roll the cart to my car and toss them in the trunk. Sometimes it’s easiest to just use bottled water from your trunk!

I am happy to say the Department of Sanitation is working on my neighborhood so I have some hope. The problem varies from neighborhood to neighborhood.

But ignorant Freepers who want to make points, even though they do not know the situation do not help.

My wife and I make our own filtered water, five gallons at a time. One filter makes all the clean water our family of six can drink, and lasts six months.

One of the great eye openers for me was hearing a lady gripe about $4 gasoline, while filling the tank of a $60,000 SUV, holding a bottle of $1.75/liter (approx $7.00/gallon) water.

Facepalm material...
