A passenger fell out of small plane and plummeted into the water in Miami's Biscayne Bay today, police said.

The plane was flying at 1,800 feet at the time.

Air traffic control received a "mayday" call around 1:30 p.m. ET when the Piper PA 46 was flying roughly eight miles southeast of Tamiami Executive Airport.

"Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! I have a door ajar and I'm heading toward Tamiami," the pilot told air traffic control. "I have a door ajar and a passenger that fell down. I'm six miles from Tamiami."

One fell out of a helicopter and another fell out of an airplane on the same day, How coincidental is that?

When nature calls you have to answer.

When you gotta go — you gotta go.

Terminal velocity does you no good in this case.

That's why it's called "terminal" velocity - the speed at which the sudden stop is fatal....120mph or so is plenty. What's really amazing is the few cases where someone has landed just right in a bog or some other environment and lived.

Did the pilot and the passenger know one another? If not, it was probably a suicide. If they do know each other, it could be a plot for the guy to fake his own death. Can it be verified that the guy was ever on board in the first place? Where is Lt. Columbo when we need him?

D. B. Cooper would be too old for a second escapade of this magnitude.

Its not the fall that kills you its the sudden stop.

Terminal velocity: for a falling object, the speed at which air resistance begins to exceed the force of gravity, so it stops accelerating. For a human being I think it’s about 160 mph—more than fast enough to kill. For a cannon ball it’s a lot higher. However, you’re right: there have been rare cases when people survived long falls—by finding ways to decrease their terminal velocity. So there are some potential benefits.
