The 50 Most Violent Cities In The World
Business Insider ^ | 11/28/2013 | PAMELA ENGEL, CHRISTINA STERBENZ AND GUS LUBIN

Drug trafficking, gang wars, political instability, corruption, and poverty have combined to make Latin America by far the most homicidal region of the world. The region has 40% of the world's murders, despite having only 8 percent of the population, according to the U.N.

The highest murder rate of all is in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, with 169 homicides per 100,000 people, according to a study published earlier this year by Mexico's Citizens' Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice. The ranking is based on 2012 data, except for San Pedro Sula and Distrito Central in Honduras, where authorities would not cooperate and 2011 data was used.

The study does not count deaths in a war zone or cities where data was not available.

Forty-one of the top 50 dangerous cities are located in Latin America. U.S. cities also made the list, lead by New Orleans at 17th, along with Detroit, St. Louis, Baltimore, and Oakland.

50) Barranquilla, Colombia had 29.41 homicides per 100,000 residents.

49) Brasilia, Brazil had 29.73 homicides per 100,000 residents.

48) Belo Horizonte, Brazil had 29.74 homicides per 100,000 residents.

47) Monterrey, Mexico had 30.85 homicides per 100,000 residents.

46) Durban, South Africa had 30.94 homicides per 100,000 residents.

45) Macapá, Brazil had 32.06 homicides per 100,000 residents.

44) San Salvador, El Salvador had 32.48 homicides per 100,000 residents.

43) Oakland, United States had 33.10 homicides per 100,000 residents.

42) Curitiba, Brazil had 34.08 homicides per 100,000 residents.

41) Baltimore, United States had 35.03 homicides per 100,000 residents.

40) St. Louis, United States had 35.39 homicides per 100,000 residents.

39) Maracaibo, Venezuela had 35.44 homicides per 100,000 residents.

38) Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa had 36.02 homicides per 100,000 residents.

37) Pereira, Colombia had 36.13 homicides per 100,000 residents.

Saint Louis doesn’t surprise me. Hell, the “knock out” appears to have originated here. I live across the river in Illinois, where in the East Saint Louis area, some 20 cops and other law enforcement types have been accused of drug trafficking and in a couple of instances, murder. All while a heroin scandal in Saint Clair county ensnared a judge for supplying drugs that killed another. Their supplier was in the probation and parole office..

Note that this list is ranked by the RATIO of murders per population - so even though ChiCongo has a lot committed by a small segment of the city, the ratio is low because of the millions of other law-abiding residents included in the city’s census.

Which shows just how bad things are in large cities like Detroit and Oakland ....

No Asia. No Europe. No Africa, except South Africa.

One would think that Beirut, Damascus, Gaza City, Baghdad and maybe Belfast would have made the list.

You seem to have made that up.

Even of the two nations you mentioned, the CIA lists Honduras as 97% Catholic, and we can assume they have been baptized as members, by the Catholic denomination.

Guatemala is up to 60% baptized members of the Catholic denomination, and it is unknown what numbers have been baptized by other denominations or religions.

"Note that this list is ranked by the RATIO of murders per population"

That's why Baghdad isn't on the list - despite hundreds and hundreds of terrorist-related homicides, its very large population keeps the ration down. But in an earlier post I wondered why Iraqi cities like Mosul and Tikrit weren't on the list despite hundreds of terrorist killings and much smaller populations than Baghdad.

“One would think that Beirut, Damascus, Gaza City, Baghdad and maybe Belfast would have made the list.”

They don’t count war zones, which leaves out the first 4 cities. I think Belfast has been pretty quiet since the “Troubles” ended, more or less. As for Africa, they don’t count places where no data is available, and I think vital statistics are in a state of flux in many of those places, to put it mildly. Am surprised that no place in Asia, or Papaua New Guinea, made the list.

I just watched it recently. If you didn’t keep a close eye out to notice the rear-projection in his scenes, you wouldn’t have known he hadn’t shot it in Mexico.

35 More than 1 in 3 pregnancies among black women end in abortion.

Can you provide a source for this?

I've been to 20 of the 50 and survived!

It doesn't surprise me in the least that San Pedro Sula, Honduras is #1. Fifteen years ago one in 4 of the people working at the airport had scars from machete fights. Today people have more money for luxuries like guns and ammunition.

Missouri’s governor is Jay Nixon, now a term-limited Democrat (and an A-1 hypocritical SOB). Nixon took office in 2007. No idea who will be next, but it’ll likely be another lifelong pol (sigh...) of the Republicrat party.

All these cities have large non-white populations...these top 50 are all either Black, Indigenous, Mullatto, or Mestizo. The one that surprises me is Brasilia, Brazil...which is a new city (only since 1960) and is the new capital of Brazil...it’s criminal minorities had to move there in recent yrs

Mexico is well represented in this list, including a #2 rating for Acapulco.A population of Third World savages is one of the most important of the 10,000 reasons why I've never set foot in Mexico.

And never will.
