I suspect a faulty connection between the driver’s brain and good sense.

It doesn’t matter. What caused their deaths was the speed at which they were going, which meant that ANY problem with the car, from a power-steering glitch to a tire blowout, to hitting a deer, was guaranteed to result in a non-survivable crash.

From what I heard on TV last night the car crashed thru 3 trees then a utility pole. The car was hauling butt!

a new report said Monday well...that was quick
To: Red Badger
If a similar failure would have caused an accident if the car was traveling at the posted 40 mph, then this accident was caused by a mechanical failure. If the failure caused the crash because the vehicle was traveling at a speed much greater than 40 mph, then speed caused this accident.
Roads are designed around a certain speed. If the car lost power steering doing 80 mph on a limited access highway, everybody walks away, probably without a scratch. But when you loose power steering on a narrow and twisty road with trees and lightposts right next to the roadway, if you are going 80 mph, you are going to hit something hard hard.

I've not followed it much, but this pic seems to indicate the final impact was against a relatively small diameter well rooted tree that sliced thru the chassis like a knife.

The news report I saw last night said they weren’t going over 45 mph approaching a 15 mph turn. Color me sceptical. I think they are making up B.S. to report .

I see a lot of results of a lot of car crashes in my line of work. That was NOT a 45 mph impact. I agree with those of you who call BS.
To: Red Badger
suffered a mechanical failure that was likely caused by a power steering fluid leak
In my 40+ years behind the wheel, I've had a few power steering pumps and high-pressure hoses fail/leak/malfunction. Never caused a real problem.
This accident was caused by speed way too fast for conditions.

Probably survivable in a Nascar chassis.
In a front fuel tank unibody, not so much.

evidence of a fluid burst and subsequent fluid trail before the skid marks... What the brakes stopped working also?
