GAINESVILLE, GA. – A north Georgia school board has approved a measure allowing some school resource officers to carry rifles.

The plan calls for a rifle to be kept in each of the city's high schools and middle schools, The Gainesville Times reported.

The weapons will be kept inside safes and will be accessible only to the school resource officer, school district officials have said. Earlier this year, district leaders said the safes would be accessible by fingerprint recognition.

Allow some school resource officers to "carry" rifles. Uh they'll be locked up in a safe. The rifles will be accesible by fingerprint recognition. Until the power goes off. I guess by keeping them locked up it'll prevent the traumatization of the chirun should they be exposed to actually seeing one in real life. As opposed to the ones they use playing video games. What idiots. Notice they didn't list elementary skrools as having the rifles on site.

The fingerprint locks are battery powered.

Lucky for us the janitor will have battery replacement on his monthly check list. LOL!

Too bad someone didn’t explain to them that rifles have too much penetration for school usage.
Shotgun is probably better.

The new high-security combo dials are self-powered, no battery- you spin the dial to power them up.

I expect the response time will be better, but still slow, since the officer must get to teh safe, open it, load the mag, then go to where the shooting has just stopped.

Also, a clever perp will put himself between the safe and the officer.

It’s a step in the right direction, though, someone is thinking that a good guy with a gun can solve problems.

I’d have gone with a short-barreled shotgun, given the ranges of encounter and the penetration problems of a rifle.

Or better yet a sidearm kept on their person at all times. For indoor security it is just as effective. (as long as the officer spends time at the range) - and it's always immediately available.

Yeah, you can control penetration better. Also a shotgun could possibly be less that lethal depending on the load................for home defense do so love my Mossberg.

Yeah, bet we all know there’s a much greater fear factor associated with those evil AR type guns. They’re so scary they need to be locked away until needed. Let’s hope the SRO isn’t taking a, uh, lengthy bathroom break when the time arises.

Wait till they publicize the race percentages of individuals who pass the background check process.

LOL! Yeah but this appears to be a Jewish person and we all know how paranoid they are always thinking somebody is out to get them. (Except the liberal Jews here in the US who hate Israel.)

I really hate it when the battery goes dead, always at the “wrong” time.

If it is locked up in a safe the officer has to travel to get it then open the safe.

The response time well be to slow.

These shooting start and end fast taking a extra minute to get to the rifle could mean many more dead.

“Too bad someone didn’t explain to them that rifles have too much penetration for school usage.

Shotgun = bad idea unless at close range. At a distance it will harm the bad guy and students but not kill the bad guy and really piss him off.

An AR-15 with a 4 power scope, mounted on a look through scope mount for the iron sights and a green laser will get the bad guy and not penetrate through a center of mass shot. Use very high quality ammo from Hornady with their 75 grain boat tail hollow-point.

It would be stupid for everyone to know who has access to the “one rifle.” I would suggest several rifles in locations known only to those that will use them. Train some teachers and administrators on how to use these weapons effectively. Only they know the locations and have quick key code access to the weapon. I would also suggest these same teachers and any teacher that has a CCL be allowed to carry in school.

When the bad guy does not know which good guy is armed, the good guys have the advantage.

Shootings in Israeli schools are rare. There is a reason and it is good weapons in the hands of good men and women.

I guess the younger kids in the grade schools don’t need any protection?

This is at least a start. IMO, not a great start, but tiny baby steps..........may eventually get it done correctly.

“Slugs or double ought?”

I’m not an expert in this field, but I’d think #2 or #4, with slugs in a shell holder just in case. IMO less chance for unwanted collateral damage

A shotgun can launch flashbangs, tear gas, whistlers, smoke, incendiaries, rubber ltl rounds, beanbags, lots more choice than a rifle. Heck if you load your own you can fire confetti and glitter.
