The First Lady, who was born on October 11, 1884, became a subject of controversy when people suspected she was romantically involved with journalist Lorena Hick Hickok. While the two never publicly addressed their relationship, their letters did nothing to dispel rumors.
1. March 5, 1933: Eleanor to Hick, on the first evening after FDRs inauguration
Hick my dearest
I cannot go to bed tonight without a word to you. I felt a little as though a part of me was leaving tonight. you have grown so much to be a part of my life that it is empty without you, even though Im busy every minute.

I dont know ...I have said the same thing

This is how DESTRUCTIVE the gay pride movement is. There is nothing in that particular letter that could not be attributed to the flowery discourse often found even between mere friends in that historical era. Now we question everyones relationship.
***
Exactly. I did not read the entire article, but I find nothing incriminating here. And I am most definitely not a fan of ER.
Charles Durning
I can see why they would be attracted to each other...I can’t IMAGINE how anyone could be attracted to ER (unless it involved her pocket book or access to it).
We call them “Lesbians by default.”
ER may well have been a lesbian, but the letters would have to be awfully explicit for me to believe it.
Along with everything else, gay-hood now makes a loving friendship *suspect*--
Dittoes to everything you said. We now fear attachments which are entirely nurturing will be misinterpreted.
Thanks. I’ve been calling them “Lesbians by Defect”. You straightened me out, though.
i can’t figure out which one was supposed to be the woman.
I particularly hate how people mock Frodo and Sam, secure in having lived life in peacetime, and never knowing how Tolkien lost so many of his young friends in WW1.
men can learn from friends. hopefully the friends know what they’re talking about.
i’d only ask close friends, not casual acquaintences.
Is it possible that porn's been lying to me all these years about how hot lesbians are?
True, but in all fairness, this relationship was being questioned in the forties.
You and those others siding with the lesbian opinion may have been overcome by our culture which has a very difficult time understanding older and differen ones
You must separate these poor err ladies, from the real thing...LIPSTICK LESBIANS!
That’s the real deal.
True. And, those were my thoughts, exactly...until I read a few more of the letters. Especially the "feeling of that soft spot just north-east of the corner of your mouth against my lips"...and the "I wish I could lie down beside you tonight & take you in my arms" part.
I know fondness of friendship was stated much more affectionately in past generations, but this is beyond that.
As others have also said.....eeeeewww.
ER was telling her Destroy your letters
Actually ER was channeling her first cousin TR. TR took care of a canal, while ER was happy to just take care of a dike.
