"Austrian authorities have ordered a search of secret tunnels beneath a former concentration camp complex where Nazi scientists are believed to have conducted nuclear research in a bid to build an atomic bomb....And recently, readings were taken of the area at St Georgen showing elevated levels of uranium - indications of subterranean implosions seven decades ago....One hitherto secret underground borehole found by geothermal imaging devices turned up an empty space yielding no clues as to what it might have been used for.....Although the war hampered their work, by the fall of the Third Reich in 1945, Nazi scientists had achieved a significant enrichment in samples of uranium.
If the Austrian site does render up proof of nuclear research, historians may yet have to rewrite the last chapters of WWII to show how close Hitler might have come to winning it.....

Although I cannot provide a link to it, I have read on multiple occasions of an above-ground nuclear test conducted by the Germans that was witnessed in the Baltic. Also, there were sketchy accounts of one or two small nuclear weapons being used on the Eastern front. From what I read — and for whatever it is worth, being unconfirmed and apocryphal — the Germans were not too impressed with a fission weapon, but were trying to build a fusion bomb instead.

I know what you’re talking about. I saw the same story. I think it was on the Military Channel. People did report seeing an enormous explosion off the Baltic Coast. I don’t know if it was an actual atomic bomb or not. I don’t know how deeply this was ever investigated. I can only imagine the horrors that could have been inflicted if the Germans had been able to place atomic warheads in their V-2 rockets which were already inflicting heavy damage in England with conventional warheads.

Reading history I am unimpressed with our own atomic program. All the resources spent on it only provided enough for three bombs. The resources were vast and not a trivial sum. What we got for that was the test bomb and then the two we dropped on Japan. It would have been some time before we would have enriched enough uranium or plutonium for yet another bomb. OTOH, the firebombings of Dresden and Tokyo, just to name two cities, indicate the atomic bombs were not the only way to destroy a city.
Of course I am only talking about the fission bombs. The current fusion weapons are in a league of their own.
The Germans did not rely solely on the Vermork Heavy Water plant, for example many people overlook that over 6 tons of Deuterium was successfully shipped to Germany from the other Saheim plant in Norway. in addition the Germans developed another H/W plant, the Montecantini plant at Merano, Italy which also produced Tritium gas codenamed “PK” for atomic weapons. They also developed the Leuna plant south of Mersberg near Berlin (codename Stalin Organ); the Beck plant near Kiel and the Linde plant near Munich.
The British 8th Army captured an underground nuclear weapons factory at Espelkamp west of Hanover on 4th April 1945 which contained 40 Anschutz Mark III-B Uranium centrifuges, one 3.8 tonne atomic bomb codenamed 76-Zentner and a working nuclear reactor. The British government still refuses to declassify it’s discovery of this factory at Esplkamp.
I cannot be certain that Espelkamp is the same place where the underground nuclear dump was located, but I do know a few things about it. Later during the British took Nazi scientists Heisenberg, Diebner, Hahn and others to Esplkamp to confront them with it and question them with respect to potential war crimes. I also know that a Polish Army radio operator Stefan Strzelczyk who was taken prisoner in the invasion of Poland was forced to work at an underground nuclear plant in this general vicinity and that in the closing months of the war when SS Lt General Kammler was tasked with the Nero decree to burn and destroy all evidence, Kammler’s task force executed all of Strzelczyk’s comrades to prevent witnesses. He was fluent in German and of great use to his German captors. Through an act of human kindness Strzelczyk escaped and was hidden by decent Germans. It seems logical to me that somehow the dead bodies interred inside this underground nuclear dump were in some way connectedwith the mass executions which Strzelczyk survived.
The OSS had information from a reliable Reichstag informant Dr Erwin Respondek about three underground nuclear tests in the Schwabian Alps in Bavaria in July 1943, which were corroborated by Allied seismic records.
Then in October 1944 at Bug Isthmus on the Island of Rugen there wereat least two above ground nuclear tests of 1 kiloton yield boosted fission weapons (Schumann-Trinks bomb).
In early March 1945 at Ohrdruf south of Erfurt in Thuringa there were another two nuclear test blasts. Soil there is is contaminated by radiation with traces of Caesium-137, Cobalt-60 and Uranium-235. There are no traces of Plutonium or Barium-135 there which could link the radiation back to Chernobyl fall out thus the appearance of trace radiation in the soil there cannot be reasonably explained other than by an atomic bomb test.
Furthermore in the woods above Starnberger See SW of Munich there was an aerial detonation of an atomic weapon during WW2 with a blast radius of 4.5km and damage effects visible out to 12.5km.
One final note WW2 British newspapers also referred to the catapult launching of Atomic test warheads in Norway. The only research station which fits the description appears to be Finse on the northern edge of Hardanger Plateau, made famous by raids on the heavy water plant at Vermork.
It is logical therefore that other underground tests occurred near St George near Gusen concentration camp.

The Schumann-Trinks boosted fusion weapons developed by the Nazis in 1942 were technically what we now call Third Generation nuclear weapons and it was the Nazi nuclear scientists under Operation Overcastwho taught American scientists how to replicate it.
In fact USA did not perfect 3rd Gen nukes until 1956.
Under operation Hexenkessel the SS wehrmacht developed a hybrid thermonuclear weapon using Tritium and Uranium. On 4 April 1945 the British 8th Army discovered a 3.8 ton thermonuclear device codenamed 76-Zentner. That discovery is still kept classified by the British even to this day.
There were two test explosions in October 1944 at Rugen, one around noon witnessed by an Italian war correspondent Luigi Romersa and another at night witnessed by an observer pilot named Hans Zinsser.
These blasts left two craters in Bug Isthmus which you can see with Google earth south of the town of Dranske. The entire peninsula remains a closed military reserve and the two crater pools are contaminated with cobolt-60 and caesium-137.
