They should have been sent to Siberia.

Or to The Lubyanka.

OMG ! the very first prisoner in world history to eat bread and water!

especially since they offered him regular food, which he chose to decline.......

definitely “newsworthy” (by NY Times “standards” anyway)

/sarcasm definitely ON

The Russians don’t believe in country club prisons, telling inmates, “This is not a restaurant; you eat what’s on the table.”

“forced to live on bread and water “

Total BS. Such a diet would constipate a person to death.

This just gave me an idea— let’s hand over custody of the Gitmo prisoners to Russia!

In case any of you aren’t aware — we are cooking them fresh food that meets the requirements of their Muslim religion, give them Korans, and so on...

Detainees Eat Well, Gain Weight on Camp Delta’s Muslim Menu

http://www.defense.gov/News/NewsArticle.aspx?ID=43686

“We have to make sure that the food is halal approved,” said Schonhoff, overseer of the galleys at Guantanamo Bay that feed the detainees and U.S. service members. “Meats for the detainees have to be handled a certain way under Muslim requirements. When I order meat for military people, I just say I want 50 pounds of chicken, and it doesn’t matter how that chicken has been handled as long as it’s USDA approved. For the Muslims, I have to have a certificate from the company that says it’s halal approved. I’m required to keep the certificate on file in case I’m ever questioned.”

For instance, a certificate of Islamic slaughter must accompany every shipment of meat for the detainees. The Islamic Services of America must certify that the meat is halal beef that was handled according to all Islamic slaughter procedures and guidelines. “

Bread and water, that’s luxury. If he was in a Kalifornica prison he could obtain sexual reassignment surgery for free.

Poor guy, not only did he land himself in a Russian prison by stupidity, he’s too stupid to realize bread and water IS vegan.

Where's the Russian version of the ACLU on this? Where's the National Lawyers Guild? Where's the Russian equivalent of PBS, prepping to do the Russian equivalent of FrontLine, or the Russian Equivalent of CBS prepping to do the Russian Equivalent of 60 Minutes, focusing on the harsh injustices of the Russian prison system? How about the Russian equivalent of This American Life; maybe the conditions inside Russian prisons would make a juicy episode?

Where's the Russian equivalent of the Institute on Medicine as a Profession, setting up to "conclude that health professionals working with the military and intelligence services 'designed and participated in cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment and torture of detainees'?

Where's the Russian Red Cross, with a big report on the awful conditions in Russian Prisons? Has the International Committee Of The Red Cross taken a look at this? If not, why not?

Where's the Russian equivalent of the Associated Press, ready to do a detailed investigation, later to be published on the front page of the Russian equivalent of the New York Times?

Where's the Russian equivalent of Human Rights Watch?

Where's the Russian equivalent of Jimmy Carter?

Where's the Russian equivalent of Amnesty International? How about the actual Amnesty International? Surely they have something to say about this? After all, they find all kinds of things to become outraged about when they are done by the United States.

How about The Lancet. They were very interested in the dietary conditions of inmates held at Guantanamo Bay. Have they nothing to say here?
