A Lorain woman was distraught Tuesday after police shot and killed her dog, which they said was aggressive toward them.
Around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, Amy Saunders, 41, of the 1900 block of Randall Street, called police after an argument with her boyfriend at her house. When police arrived they saw Saunders’ Labrador “Champion,” barking, growling and running around their cruiser, according to the police report. Saunders called the dog to the back of the house, and police were able to walk up to resolve the conflict Saunders had with her boyfriend.
After talking to Saunders, police were walking back to their cruiser when the dog ran from the house, charging at them and growling, according to police. Officers shot and wounded the dog, which ran to the backyard. When police followed the dog, they saw that he was “injured severely” and shot the wounded animal again, according to police.
Saunders denied that Champion, who she’s owned for three years, was being aggressive to officers.
“He’s not vicious … no dog deserves to die for that,” Saunders said. Before leaving, police issued Saunders a summons for animal at large. Despite her pending court date, all Saunders can do is mourn the loss of her beloved animal.
“He made me smile every day,” she said.

You called the cops and knew they were coming. Of course, the dog will get excited when a cop car pulls up, lights flashing, strangers getting out. Tie up the poor dog or leave him in the house.
More proof (if any is needed) that today’s cops are NOT your friend.
Another case of failing to understand Standard Operating Procedures:
1. Arrive in APC.
2. Shoot chihuahua.
3. Taser owner.
4. Eat donut.

Cowardly cops acted like cowardly sissies, and covered up their punkish, small penis inferiority by issuing a summons, transferring all the blame onto the victim. Sure the victim should have had her dog secured, but real men would have known the lab was just having a good bark.
Everybody should know by now to expect that kind of behavior from the police. I happens many times every month. If you take a calculated risk dialing them for help, lock up securely all that is near and dear to you. Expect it!! That we cannot explain this attitude adjustment does not matter in the least.
One should not call police for anything less than imminent danger to one’s life and then only if one is out of ammo. And tying up one’s dog prior to the arrival of the police is not necessarily wise. They need to be able to shoot something and a dog is better than one or one’s wife or child.
uh! could I substitute my wife for my dog? I was not aware that was an option.
My dog likes to hunt and wants to jump on me and lick my face whern I come home late and drunk.

My first reaction is to get pxssed because we hear of these so many times. Is it gross arrogance by those whose role is to protect and serve the public, from whom their paycheck originates. Or are there circumstances that we are not aware of that warrant it?
The discharge of a firearm in public and killing of a pet needs to be taken seriously and be retained on an officer’s record forever. I’d favor a citizens panel to investigate and review these types of cases and not rely on an internal investigation.
The police chief should tell cops if a dog is there, spray it with pepper spray like a mailman does. If they shoot a dog, they’re fired and prosecuted. Where I grew up the mayor hired the chief. If that’s the case where you live, support someone for mayor who is against killing dogs.

I usually shoot my dog before I call the police. It saves time.
2a. If no dog around to shoot and caged parakeet is present, shoot ‘da bird and/or crush the cage. Proceed to next item on the list.

No kidding. I was protesting on a median then called over by a METRO cop and subsequently arrested for fail to have ID,disobey officer & not crossing street at a crosswalk. My whole outlook has changed. Got a civil rights lawyer but cannot pursue his abuse because probable cause was established when he nabbed us on the jaywalk chg. We are now in a full blown police state.....
I’m sensing that the mindset has become more about defending a self serving club, instead of defending and serving all Americans, kind of like our politicians.
If they will readily shoot a pet or a dog, they will readily shoot a human. The best way to reign this BS in, is for citizens to contact and demand their elected mayor fix it and respond appropriately. Politicians respond by reigning in their appointed underlings, and that interaction remains as the only power the citizens have.
