Rebooting Carl Sagan's seminal "Cosmos" miniseries three decades later is almost impossible — unless you happen to be renowned astrophysicist and science educator Neil deGrasse Tyson.

For those who may have missed the original back in 1980, "Cosmos: A Personal Voyage" was a documentary series on PBS that explored the universe as well as the history of scientific discovery. Sagan's topics of discussion ranged from Japanese folklore to debunking astrology to the ultimate fate of the stars and galaxies that surround us.

Now Tyson is hosting a new version of the TV series called "Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey," with the first episode airing in March on Fox and the National Geographic Channel.

This thing was worse than my worst fears. Just awful. They had no voice, no message, no audience in mind. It does not rise to the level of hokey. An embarrassment, and worse, a wasted opportunity.

Carl Sagan was a good scientist and a great salesman. His vision, his message drove the original Cosmos. Dr. Tyson probably did as well as could be expected given the material, but he is very much a lesser epigone of Sagan. Great special effects and computer graphics in the service of a muddled and confused message. The fancy-schmatzy computer graphics added to the confusion and detracted from whatever message they thought they had. The cheesy “Also Sprach Zarathustra” Musik didn’t help, either. If you watched the first episode you know less about the cosmos than before.

Four rotten tomatoes. In case I wasn’t clear, I HATED IT.

Brian, the dog, would have been vastly preferable in virtually any role, producer, director, writer, narrator, host, computer graphics.

A real stinker. Premiering in 147 countries and 47 languages and going “splat” is embarrassing.

The cartoons used to describe some of our best astronomers of the past was, (imo), juvenile kids stuff..! As a (former) amateur astronomer I was greatly disappointed in his presentation.

(Did you see the prelude to the show? Why it was our current commander in chief himself, BHO!)
