Banned — milk, yogurt, chocolate, cheese, eggs: Are allergy-based food bans no longer reasonable?

An Ontario parent says the list of allergenic foods prohibited from his daughter’s Grade 1 class is so long that it has become almost impossible to make a nutritious lunch in the morning.

Fearing the risk of anaphylactic shock among one of its students, the Toronto-area school has made a list of prohibited snacks, including peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, sesame seeds, melon, avocado and all dairy products.

Tony Perfetto has taken to making jelly or margarine sandwiches for his seven-year-old daughter. “It’s just a little bit of jelly with two pieces of bread, for now. But how long before gluten is banned? Because everybody and their brother is allergic to that now,” he said.

At my grandson’s school they have 2 lunchrooms.
Regular grub and “allergy” free grub.

I doubt that will last long because somebody will want to be “mainstreamed” and start filing lawsuits.

This is ridiculous. Where did all these allergies come from?

Many allergies are thought to be the body’s immune system reacting to certain substances thinking the substances are invasions of the body. Most of it is treatable and the body can be trained to stop reacting to the products, even the dreaded peanut allergy.

Some of them are caused by chemicals and additives in foods, and still others have genetic causes.

With regards to the genetic-causes, as breathtakingly politically-incorrect as it is to say: a lot of kids, who had these allergies in the past never survived long enough to have children of their own. Hence, over the past fifty years or so, we’ve been breeding these genes in to the population, and unless and until gene-based therapy is perfected, the rates of these particular allergies in the population will only continue to increase.

Most are bogus. This is being done by people interested only in controlling the lives of others.

Interesting.....thanks.

Re. the peanut allergies.....don’t the kids actually have to ingest it to have a reaction? I’m not sure why other kids aren’t allowed to eat peanuts.

Some folks claim being in the same airplane with a peanut will do them in. That’s why you get pretzels now...

Abolish school—problem solved.

Except for Islam, “school” is the longest-running, most successful hoax of all time.

No. People with this allergy have been known to react violently against the smell of peanuts. It is a severe allergy.

Don't know it that's true...but it was my first thought also.

No. Some people can be so allergic that contact can trigger the reaction.

Our school has separate lunch tables for those kids with the most severe allergies. I think that’s a reasonable accommodation. Prohibiting 98% of the school population from eating what they like (and is harmless to them) is not.

I remember when I was very young, a couple of times I drank water out of puddles on the sidewalk. I haven’t had the flu since!

According to this article, Common Beliefs About Peanut Allergy: Fact or Fiction?that is overblown. The article says that peanut particles have to become airborne to have a severe reaction, not just smelling them. The article also explains why peanuts were removed from planes. Interesting.

Strange...All the time I was in school I never even heard of someone allergic to gluten, etc. Not one.

This is ridiculous. Where did all these allergies come from?

Fear

Fear of illness and fear of death.

Because of our great medical system death has become rare and far removed from most people’s experience. In the past few people made it in to their teens without having experienced the death of a close relative up close and personal. Many if not most would experience the death of a relative in the home.

Today people are isolated from death. Death has been removed from the home and happens in hospitals, old age homes or hospice houses. Families often do not expose their children to the dying process that their relatives are experiencing for fear of traumatizing their children.

Death has become a far more scary unknown because of this isolation from death that our affluence has made possible.

The unfamiliarity with death combined with a new and more crippling lack of religious faith have made people pathologically fearful of anything that could cause illness and death. Because people no longer have faith in the protection of God or the truth of an afterlife they have an unreasonable fear of death and so will go to extraordinary lengths to isolate themselves from risk of illness or death.

This fear has become so endemic in our society that even the religious are becoming infected with this phobia.

Food allergies do exist but they are far more rare and most are far less dangerous than what would be required to justify these extreme measures.

What does dairy have to do with anything? It’s not like it can dust up like nuts (AND even that I question)

Most of them are undiagnosed and parents just say their kids have it, or whatever the new thing is, “just to be safe”.
