The young American woman trampled to death by elephants in Thailand was a "fearless" outdoor researcher who knew how to handle dangerous animals, her family said Friday.
Lily Glidden's body was found in a forest five days after she went for a walk in the Kaeng Krachan National Park and never returned, police said.
Her camera contained photos of wildlife, and investigators believe she was crushed by elephants based on the nature of her injuries.
"We believe that what happened to Lily was a result of unknowable and unusual circumstances which she must have been unable to foresee or prevent," her family said in a statement.
Glidden, who graduated from Tufts University in 2012 with a biology degree, had done work trapping wolves in the West, handling venomous snakes in Hong Kong, and counting game animals on the Serenegti plain. She spent a year in tracking and survival training at a wilderness school.

Looks like this was incorrect. RIP.
A friend of Timothy Treadwell?
Fearless can have a downside.
>> The young American woman was a “fearless” outdoor researcher
Fearless != invincible. An important lesson.
fear is a natural survival mechanism
kind of obvious now...
I wonder why she didn’t take pictures. Oh well.
Even experienced hunters armed with elephant guns aren’t fearless around wild elephants. She was fearless to the extent of foolhardiness. RIP.
Righto. A 450/400 caliber Cordite rifle might have helped.
It’s obviously painful losing a loved one but there seems to be a latter day trend of families rationalizing dangerous and foolish acts by claiming, to use this case as an example, the deceased ‘knew what she was doing’ (questionable, even doubtful) or that ‘she died doing what she loved’ (being trampled?).
It seems to be an offshoot of the self esteem culture in which nonstop meaningless praise is heaped on children.
She learned that elephants don’t respond to “here kitty, kitty...”
Kaeng Krachan National Park IS A GUN-FREE ZONE
“Hold muh Lao Khao and watch this . . .”
She probably thought elephants to be more valuable than, or equal to, humans.
How are the elephants?
Mammals can be tough critics.
Yes. A truly fearless woman would have taken the time to get a nice shot of the final elephant foot or feet coming down to crush her. Oh well. I guess my definition of fearless and theirs is very different.
Looks like she actually did not know how to deal with dangerous animals after all.
What’s the elephants’ side of the story?
Karamojo Bell used a .303 and was a master of the rear quartering shot into the brain. He would stalk right into a herd and start killing the bulls left and right. It is said he was indirectly responsible for countless deaths from enraged elephants killing young colonial hunters seeking to duplicate his feats.
Fearless has downsides. Intelligence and fear are good things. Knowing what is what and when to boogie is better.
They ain't saying, but clearly it was a knock-out game posse.
