Meth lab discovered inside Chamblee hotel

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. —

Investigators dismantled meth lab found at a DeKalb County hotel Saturday night.

Channel 2 Action News was at the scene as the Georgia Bureau of Investigations began their investigation. Our crews watched them, armed with search warrant, go inside and investigate the meth lab.

The owner of the Lodge on Buford Hotel only meant to evict a tenant who hadn't paid his bill, but he found himself calling Chamblee police.

“When the officer got here, the tenant had actually left. He went inside with the owner of facility and found all the components of a methamphetamine laboratory,” said GBI agent W. Joseph Chesnut.

Soon after, the GBI arrived.

“We secured a search warrant, the DeKalb County fire department went in with their hazardous material crew, they took air quality readings to ensure the air quality was safe for the people on that floor,” Chesnut said.

Chesnut said it was the second meth lab they've been called to in the past week and a half in metro Atlanta.

“Nobody has asked me if I wanted drugs. So I'm a little surprised to hear that, but I guess you're going to get that at all these kind of places,” said hotel guest Chris Mercer.

They use hotel rooms because the chemicals are toxic and will eventually poison the building, so they rent a room and destroy that one. Now the hotel will be on the hook for clean up.

This isn’t unusual, but it’s usually less nice hotels and motels.

They found a tiny one in a nursing home a year or so ago. I forget where. I don’t think that it was a resident doing it, but they didnt exactly say that it was an employee either. I guess they’re getting tinier and more portable. Maybe now that the Mexican gangs are dealing more in heroin, Americans are having to, you know, do the jobs we said they wouldn’t do.

Ashtabula OH two years ago. According to ABC, at least one resident was involved, so I didn’t remember exactly right.

I personally am always vigilant about this stuff, on guard for funny smells, etc. Of course they can get things by you, but the thing to remember is it can be ANYPLACE. So many people in Everett use meth, you know they have to get it someplace

I was renting a storage unit in a warehouse when the guy who rented mine to me and owned it, rented to a young girl and she and her boyfriend proceeded to start cooking some meth. Burnt the whole place to the ground. The girl got some flash burns and the guy is still on the loose. The evidence went up in smoke and so no charges so far and probably never will be. I have plans for these two, I am old now and have no hobbies.

True story:

I was on business, staying at a major hotel in Canada for four days. I left one day and neglected to remove the “do not disturb sign”. My room was not touched. Kind of irritating to return to an unmade room at 9:00 PM (long day and dinner). Freely admit, it was my bad.

The next morning I mentioned this to the front desk:

“Policy. If that sign is on the door, we do not enter a room”

My comment back:

“so if I want to dispose of a body, I could book the room for a week, put out the sign and I am good to go?”
“well…………yes. I guess”

She was not amused.

Police bust Schuyler meth lab

DIX, May 25—An early morning search of a Dix town residence last week is being called the biggest methamphetamine drug bust in the state by authorities.
District Attorney Joseph Fazzary said the raid was accomplished by a task force consisting of his office, the Watkins Glen Police, state police, Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office, and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, authorities obtained a search warrant for 1334 Roloson Hollow Road, Dix, last Wednesday, May 18. Authorities said the search uncovered some 21 kilograms of methamphetamine, or around 62 lbs., plus 450 lbs. of methamphetamine oil solution.

Uhh gee. I don't think the metric system works like that. 21*2.2=46.2

As I have mentioned before, Everett was hit hard by the housing bubble crisis and many houses are vacant, boarded up, condemned, owned by faraway lending institutions, etc. Sometimes people, including meth cooks, squat in them, and one was blown up.
This is a bit off topic, but I see signs that we haven’t learned a bloody dang thing from the housing bubble crisis and it seems to me that we could have another one.

Why would you even mention that to the front desk? Not to mention making the smart-ass remark about leaving a dead body in there.

Do not disturb means do not disturb. If you are paying for the room, hotel staff are trained to honor that strictly so they don't walk in on somebody having sex or maybe some guy who just wants to be left alone for a couple days.

I bet you would feel violated if they went in to clean the room regardless of the sign.

Yes, I generally agree. This is the type of passive-aggressive guest that creates stories for hotel/motel staff to dine out on.

easy sam easy.

It was not as melodramatic as you think. it was actually a pleasant conversation and an education (for me) on the sanctity of the "do not disturb" sign.

I’ve pretty much got all of that stuff in my workshop except for all the empty Sudafed boxes.

Nowadays, a “meth lab” is basically a one liter soda pop bottle, given that everyone uses the single pot, “Shake N Bake” method, that is, the few left in the U.S. still trying to make homemade meth, since almost all of it comes in from Mexico now.
