The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Hope yours clears up quick. I *never* get sick, so I’m a big baby when I do. (thinking “I’m going to die” LOL). DH had it & thought it was allergies. Only about 4 days, but a couple of those were pretty water logged & a little sore throat for about 24 hours. No meds but a box & a half of Kleenex. It coulda been sooo much worse.

Ahhh. That makes sense. I love stir fry, epecially with peppers and onions! We are almost out of homegrown onions. I still have one bottle of ground onion powder that we made and a few sgraggly onions. All the peppers are gone.

I used the last sweet red bell to make some turkey sausage.

Good for you. Now do a little happy dance around the garden, and maybe throw a little rain dance in too.

Mine already cleared. At the first hint of sore throat, I drink tea with rose hips, cloves, cinnamon, and raw honey. Also eat or drink lots of Oranges, orange juice, peppers etc.

Also lots of chicken soup with veggies and lots of spices.

People mulch with wood chips here. It helps to have a hot climate to melt them down quicker. As of now I don’t have much of a veg garden but my fruit trees all have wood chips mulch

Free wood chips from tree trimming crews
Wood chip also work in a colder climate where I would pile them up so they can heat up. And take black compost from the lowest layers periodically. Cover with a tarp to retain heat so they melt down quicker.

Charcoal...you are copying Indians slash and burn which is actually a good strategy

That’s great. Broccoli is soooo good for your health. I am still trying to learn to like it, but somehow it just doesn’t appeal that much.

I do like broccoli, cheese and rice casserole with lots of cheese and onions.

I feel fortunate, that we don’t have to worry about deer. We do however have those bushy tailed rats called squirrels.

We catch them in live traps and release them on our land about 15 miles away where there is enough forage to keep them from wanting to return.

The Life and Times of Me

I hurt my right foot last week and I'm limping on it now which is better than cringing every time I put it on the floor and it fits in the shoe again. I had to get out today to pick up meds at drug store, something at Lowes and go to the liquor store (that was the most important as I was out of Amaretto, so got that and a bottle of sweet and sour mix to make Amaretto Sours, have to look up the recipe), absolutely had to go to grocery, from one end to the other, and when I got home, I was exhausted from the limping. Washed my hands really good and stayed away from people as much as possible.

I am so tired, Johnny, I can't plant anything today. Tomorrow, I'll do the tobacco and I read the way you do it, with the paper and knife and I'll do it that way, too.

I have some seeds to plant in February. Earlier, I studied every seed packet I had and noted when to plant them in general and how deep to plant them - wrote that all on the seeds packets so I could see it quickly, then separated all the packets and that's it and I'm not doing that over. What it is, is what it is.

I have bunches to plant the first of March and they are all in a plastic bag. My February bag is the tobacco, Carolina Cucumbers the first of February, Sun King Hybrid Broccoli middle of February, Supremo Hybrid Cucumber and National Pickling Cucumber the last week of February.

I have a garden of plants under the grow lamp growing larger and larger. Surely would like to get those outside but I don't trust this February weather at all based on January weather. I will have to get more potting soil mix but not until the foot is good. I have plenty of seed starter so don't need that.

We're supposed to have ice Sunday, and rain on Tuesday. I'll believe it when I see it.

Yep, terra preta. I also break up pots and stuff I collect from the curb and incorporate that as well.

I have all the free tree chips I can load about 1/2 mile from me, so I use them.

It was sand and sandburrs when I was born here cough-mumble years ago. I'm trying to make soil.

Yes, it’s been very strange for us this year, especially the lack of rain.

A colleague who retired last year “threw” a potted plant right next to fence in the small garden I have at my work place — I could hardly see it because it is in an area where my Japanese honeysuckle grows and is very viney. I water regularly (more so than ever now).

A few days ago, I went out and was struck by the most beautiful flowers - cream, burgundy and spotted, many flowers along a long stem and two more stems that were loaded with flower buds. Had NO idea what it was!

Later that day, I happened over to my local garden store and saw a similar plant with similar leaves that had beautiful yellow blossoms on it, many running down a long stem and knew it was related to my mystery plant.

Turned out it was an orchid!! I don’t grow orchids but know my former colleague did - that plant has been out there ignored for almost a year and it is starting to look like it came from a florists shop. I don’t have my camera with me today but I can take photo and post it to next week’s thread. The flowers are stunning.

I always thought orchids were difficult to grow and never bothered with them but maybe I’ll start paying more attention.

Excellent. I was threatening to get out the honey & lemon, but I threaten awhile before I act. Chicken soup will cure pretty much anything.

I am so sorry about your foot. I hope it continues to improve.

You are way ahead of me on the organization, but that is my main garden chore for February. I won’t actually be planting anything outdoors till May or first week in June.

I’ll be ordering the patio pots tonight. I have plenty of soil stock piled from last year.

I like Amaretto Ice Cream Sundae as well as other ways of using Amaretto.

Well, any precip at this point would be good for your gardening efforts, but I understand your skepticism.

“I started taking Vitamin D3 supplements,”

Two years ago, doc checked my Vit. D3 and I was at the bottom. He put me on 2000 units Vit. D3 a day and I have been out of it for weeks, kept forgetting it. That is one thing I remembered to get at Walgreens. It happened to be on sale, get one bottle at regular price and another at half price and I did that so I now have a total of 600 gelcaps. Won’t have to think about that for a long time.

Many people are deficient in Vitamin D. It does seem to be important to a person’s immune system.
