He found a positive association with the most outgoing also being the most likely to cheat on their partners.
Dr Holtzman said: That is one of the most interesting personality variables in the study, because it suggests that there are certain people who are high in these extroverted traits that do both, engage in short term and long term relationships, and that is something previous researchers could not explain.
They may be the life and soul of the party but extroverts are more likely to break your heart.
Thats according to new research which found that even while married, confident, outgoing people are able to have a string of affairs without feeling guilty.
It also found that they carry more narcissistic and psychopathic personality traits.
Dr Nicholas Holtzman, of Georgia Southern University and who led the study, said: Most people seeking long-term relationships think that extroverts are going to be great mates - because they have positive emotions and they are fun to be around.
They are the life of the party - they are very enjoyable.
But our study shows that there is the potential for extraverts to turn towards short-term mating strategies. These are the people who tend to be more narcissistic, more psychopathic.
He said those seeking long-term relationships are better off with people who are more conscientious and agreeable because they tend to be more honest, humble and less likely to pursue one night stands.
It is one of the trade-offs a person faces when they are trying to get into a relationship - if they find somebody who is very extroverted, they might find themselves with a mate who engages in one night stands, he added.
They tend to be a little more integrated, higher in honesty and humility.

So...extroverts are assholes? Sounds overgeneralized. Oh well, I guess I’m not so upset at being called introverted anymore.
CC
Extroverts are more likely to engage other people in conversation and show interest. This creates more opportunity and temptation. Assuming and normal distribution of temptation resistance, this puts extroverts is a situation of dealing with more temptation. As for not feeling guilt, extroverts may simply show a better public face.
According to “The Sociopath Next Door” one in ten is a sociopath. Many sociopaths are extroverts. Not all extroverts are sociopaths. The word needs fewer “studies” on stupid things like this and more $500,000 studies on why cats always, and I mean ALWAYS want to be in the bathroom with you. If anybody is interested Freepmail me and I’ll write up a proposal.
Cats like running water and the sound of it. They like toilet bowl water. They also double as their own personal solar collectors.
Exhibit A: Bill Clinton
Fortunately for him, he married someone who didn’t care and later, the majority of voters didn’t care either. Morals are for other people, not “rock stars.”
“Cats like running water and the sound of it. They like toilet bowl water. They also double as their own personal solar collectors.”
Hey, I’m just going to plagiarize that to the tune of $100k each. So, that’s what the cat is doing after downing an entire can of “Liver and fish pâté with cheese, egg and mixed vegetables.” She’s using sunlight to power her digestion! (Oh, thanks. If I get the grant I’ll send you a fruit basket from Costco.)
I’m not an extrovert, however I find this blanket judgment ignorant and untrue, as I know a lot of great extroverts.
My friends: When it comes to meeting other people someone has to start. It will be the extrovert. Better to hang out with them than to keep waiting for the (good) introvert to come out of his/her shell. After that it’s all downhill. Married women I’m sure don’t mind hooking up with these types for just ‘a little while’. Life is boring whether you’re the introvert who is married or the one who is waiting.
My experience with one particular extrovert, my ex-wife, is that her extrovert tendencies were overcompensation for huge insecurity issues. Then, a couple of fast talking guys stroked her insecure ego, she fell for it, and our marriage tanked.
My guess is, and I am not a psychiatrist, there can be a variety of issues that may feed extrovert behavior.

When I go to the gym part of my exercise is to meet people and remember their names. Ill just walk up to somebody Ive seen repeatedly for a long while, smile and tell them a joke. Weve usually nodded at each other in passing or shared a machine. They laugh (usually) and I introduce myself. We have a short conversation (usually.) Its astonishing that most men are unable to have even a short conversation. But, some of those will come by when they see me and say hello. If you can get them talking about something they know, theyre quite happy to converse. (Usually the local universitys football adventures. Then, people from all over the gym will jump in with their take on Joe Blows chances for a Heisman this year.) But, for the most part, they cant wing it on other subjects. The exceptions are the truly conservative types who are, in general, better read and informed. Theres a commercial air-conditioning repairman who can quote the Constitution, chapter and verse. I think he has the whole thing memorized. He knows history like nobody Ive met locally and he has his own theories on politics. We generally have great conversations.
It’s probably just a function of just interacting with more people.
Cheating has mostly to do with opportunity, and not so much anything else. “Trust” is very overrated in this context, which is something many people have difficulty accepting.
Don’t want to cheat? Don’t put yourself in that position. Odds go down drastically.
What an idiotic study. If this could not be explained previously, let me take a shot at it
usually the act of consensual sex is preceded by at least bit of socializing and talk. If there is no talk at all going on between the parties but eventually somebody breaks the ice, I highly suspect that the first thing said is NOT so
you interested in having sex? unless the candidate had deliberately gone to some place which promoted sex as the raison d'être for being there. The bottom line is that the person who is more willing to talk to others has more willingly exposed himself or herself to the possibility that the conversation leads to further and more involved personal interaction. Nothing too complicated about that
.
“extrovert tendencies were overcompensation for huge insecurity issues”
bingo. Also, personality types must be viewed as gradients not categorical. We are all unique.
Bwahahaha! The biggest bunch of HS I have ever heard. Well not the biggest but right up there. I guess its getting tougher to think up new theories to get a Pell grant. :-)
