Winter weirdness: Is Arctic warming to blame?
The Christian Science Monitor (via Yahoo) ^ | February 9, 2014 | Pete Spotts

Posted on 02/10/2014 1:36:03 PM PST by CedarDave

For Alaskans who have basked in record warmth, Atlantans who abandoned cars during a January snowstorm, or Californians enduring drought, this winter's extremes have been nothing if not memorable.

Drought or unusual warmth is in sync with the effects that climate scientists expect from global warming. But what about wintertime invasions of Arctic air into the US Deep South or into China, where, a new study indicates, record cold events became more frequent over the past 10 to 20 years?

For some climate scientists, January's extremes and the atmospheric patterns that nurtured and sustained them are fresh bits of information to apply to these intriguing questions: Has global warming's effect on the Arctic set the stage for persistent weather patterns that lead to extremes? If so, is the decline in Arctic sea ice the stage manager for the wintry events?

Nearly two years ago, two researchers identified atmospheric features that appear to tie a warming Arctic to mid-latitude weather extremes. Since then, when persistent weather patterns have brought drought or heat waves or repeated invasions of cold air to usually mild locations in winter, these links to the Arctic have become a go-to explanation among many commentators and policymakers.

Researchers working on the issue, however, caution that while they are uncovering intriguing hints of this tie-in, it is far from ironclad.

Nor is it merely an arcane debating point. If the proposition holds up, in principle it could help improve seasonal forecasts for temperature and precipitation.

"That would have huge economic implications," says Cecilia Bitz, a climate scientist at the University of Washington in Seattle who specializes in the role that Arctic sea ice plays in the climate system.

"Huge economic implications in the form of government grants. Yippee!"

Not only that, but its marketed to make people believe that they are raping the planet and don’t care about the polar bears if they don’t drive a prius.
Liberals do everything according to ‘feelings’. If you don’t live a green lifestyle, then you don’t care.

Every year, the weather is different than it was the year before. Sometimes a little different. Sometimes very different.

Every year. Everywhere.

I invite others to post links to the Arctic summer sea ice graphics that show this past year the ice extent recovered from the retreat of the previous year (2012) and even that shrinkage was not all that different from documentation earlier in the 20th century before the age of satellites.

These people need to be locked in a room with Joe Bastardi for as long as it takes.

Saturday Summary February 8, 2014

Joe talks about another wave of cold coming down, and points out blocking over Greenland is a sign of solar inactivity. Also, gratefully, Northern California should get a good dosing of rain.

“extreme”
“unusual”

What these scientists fail to understand is that weather varies. Weather doesn’t feel compelled to conform to the averages and the norms. “extreme” weather is normal.

Sometimes it’s cold, sometimes it’s warm. Sometimes it’s very cold, sometimes it’s very warm.

Get used to it!

‘It’s nuts’: Joe Bastardi shreds global warming study for ‘stealing and repackaging’ ideas of others [correction added]

Posted at 7:20 pm on February 9, 2014 by Twitchy Staff

@BigJoeBastardi @BloombergNews sssh...Joe you're ruining the left wing bourgeois plan of burdening us w/ their unconstitutional "carbon tax"
Nathan (@OdinsSleepiner) February 09, 2014

WeatherBell.com chief meteorologist and outspoken critic of Al Gore-style global warming “science,” Joe Bastardi, tweeted a link to a Bloomberg News article about attempts to determine “why the rate of global warming has eased in the past 20 years while greenhouse-gas emissions have surged to a record”:

Global-Warming Slowdown Due to Pacific Winds, Study Shows bloom.bg/1o7gjHo via @BloombergNews
THIS IS ALL CLIMATE CYCLE THEORY!—
Joe Bastardi (@BigJoeBastardi) February 09, 2014

In other words, those “scientists” are trying to figure out why the planet isn’t cooperating with their scare mongering rhetoric.

Bastardi blasted the authors of the study for “discovering” what’s been known for decades and re-shaping the findings of others to fit their agenda:

The Oscillation in wind/ocean is a known and leads to the shifts back and forth in multi-decadol patterns. They are discovering what is known—
Joe Bastardi (@BigJoeBastardi) February 09, 2014

AGW people dont know climate cycle theories that many of us do.. and suddenly "discover" them and then own them as their own. Its nuts—
Joe Bastardi (@BigJoeBastardi) February 09, 2014

Its like they are redistributing ideas that someone else found, and making them their own. Literally stealing and repackaging for own agenda—
Joe Bastardi (@BigJoeBastardi) February 09, 2014

To all agw people for the kajillionth time read Dr Bill Grays paper on this which explains it all. His idea, from 70s
typhoon.atmos.colostate.edu/Includes/Docum…
Joe Bastardi (@BigJoeBastardi) February 09, 2014

The 1970′s was of course back when there was an ice age scare instead of global warming.

Update:

Bastardi adds this:

@TwitchyTeam I wil probably do my @PatriotPost this week on the repackaging of known climate cycle arguments as AGW driven. #desperation
Joe Bastardi (@BigJoeBastardi) February 10, 2014

Correction: The original version of this post indicated that Mr. Bastardi was a forecaster with Accuweather. Bastardi is a meteorologist with WeatherBell.com. Twitchy apologizes for the error.

One of these days the godless liberals are going to learn that God put the planet on autopilot. It’s self-regulating. Only arrogant pissanr liberals believe than man can put a dent in the world’s climate system. Short of total nuclear conflagration, that is. Which might put a temporary dent in it.

Yes. However, in Alaska temperatures are getting ready to plunge again into real winter weather.

Per the graph in this article:

https://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/

Yes, sea ice is below average...but it appears to be outpacing 2009/2010, 2010/2011, and 2011/2012. So, it seems to be doing ok....and certainly within the 2 standard deviation band on the graph.

I’m sure you are right - no matter what the sea ice extent, the GW cultists will howl that it means we are doomed. But I would like to think that fewer people would buy into it - after paying huge utility bills to heat their houses this winter.

Another scientist with TO MUCH GRANT MONEY on hand. They got nothing. They can’t prove nothing. That’s why they come up the BS articles and have to manipulate and cherry pick the data.

The pool of cold air in the northern hemisphere is like a balloon. Squeeze it someplace, it bulges another. That pattern changes from year to year. The amount of cold air changes over time based on a number of different cycles of varying length. And yes, it’s all based on the rhythms of the sun. Right now, it looks like we are headed for a colder cycle after having been through a warmer one.

The Penn and Teller “Bullshit” episode on Global Warming was great. They had the founder of the weather channel with a graph of global temperatures, CO2 and solar output. Global temperatures tracked solar activity closely, while CO2 only went up over time.

Back in the 70s, we had an acquaintance whose sister lived in Juneau.

It was consistently warmer there than in SW WI.

Lengthy article but the scientists' convolutions in trying to link recent frigid events to global warming misses one very important element in the analysis: The impact of the sun...Scientists have no idea how many and what variables control our climate, let alone what the relationship of those variables to the climate is, let alone how the variables interact with each other - eg how does rising CO2 affect cloud formation and dissipation and visa versa. Right now we have three models predicting anything from 1 inch to 20.5 inches of snow for Philly the day after next - I say it again - and yet they can tell us that we'll have a rise in the sea levels by exactly 3.9 inches and increased average temperature of 8.2 degrees F in exactly 50 years - preposterous.....

Horse Hockey. They've only glommed onto these 'effects' after the warming they predicted didn't occur, nor did the drastic rise in sea levels, or increase in hurricanes hitting the US mainland.

"...global warming's effect on the Arctic..."

Someone's not doing even grade school level research, to make a statement like that.

Even low infos who read the UK Daily Mail have seen satellite photos showing that Arctic sea ice has more than doubled since last winter.

GorBullWarming is the root cause of ALL YOUR MISERIES!

Even those minus zero temps!

BUT, you are just too stupid and uneducated to understand all those complex intricacies.
