For the first time since the Pew Research Center has kept track of such things, the percentage of American women who are more highly educated than their husbands is higher than the percentage of husbands who have more degrees than their wives.
Gathered from census data, research shows that 21 percent of women have more degrees than their husbands, whereas 20 percent of men have more degrees than their spouses. (In 1960, these numbers were 7 percent for women and 14 percent for men.) The trend can be seen most clearly among newly married couples, because, for the past 20 years, younger women have been more likely to pursue higher education than men.
And so we move forward in this wide world of people making choices about education and marriage and life in general. Hold on tight for further updates in another 10 years or so!
Let’s not confuse academic achievement with intelligence, please. I can teach a chicken how to count using colored corn kernels.
Not all of us. Some of us are your fellow FReepers. Hubby is grateful I have an education. Even though he lost his job last fall, and our income dropped by two thirds, we’ve been able to live on my income.
How many of these degrees are in elementary education, hospitality management, sociology, gender studies, and english?
Many a college degree is nothing more than proof of living another 4 or 5 years on Daddy’s dime. While both sexes do it, they didn’t come up with the MRS degree for nothing.
Yes of course. Colleges discriminate against males and employers prefer women.
“How many of these degrees are in elementary education, hospitality management, sociology, gender studies, and english?”
This is the first question that should be answered; a lot of people getting degrees are getting trophy degrees. Hospitality management can be used to start a small hotel or restaurant, but strangely these women don’t have an interest in making their own way. I wonder if the hospitality management degree is used to run the house once they get it from their husbands in the divorce settlement.
“Many a college degree is nothing more than proof of living another 4 or 5 years on Daddys dime.”
True; then they seek to go live off of their husband’s dime.
“While both sexes do it, they didnt come up with the MRS degree for nothing.”
*snicker* Much like Betty Broderick: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betty_Broderick
Maybe in your house. Right now, it’s almost 8PM here, and my retired husband has been working for about 10 hours trimming out a room in our house. No Buds or football intervened.
So, riddle me this: Which has the better chance of getting a real job with continuing income (outside of some university) — 1) A female PhD in Women’s Studies or 2) a male who is a certified Master Plumber? Who will have the better income prospectus over the long haul? [Hint: it isn’t the PhD in Women’s Studies.]
I have more paper degrees than my husband, but he is way smarter than I am!
that doesn’t prove she’s right and you’re wrong’ that just proves you lie to your wife to stop arguments. :-)
the congregation now says “aaaaaa-—mennnnnnnnn.”
Doesn’t mean much. The Educational system is horrible. Besides, tons of great leaders weren’t terrific in school. Didn’t Reagan fail Economics?
to be honest i don’t think women would respect a man who they didn’t think was smarter than them, or at least have the capacity to be. men need respect of wives as much as women need love from husbands.
That was my assumption also.
Lies, damn lies, and statistics. Who knows?
When my husband and I got married, 25 years ago this immediately past Feb. 4, I had more education then he did. Now he has more education than I do. Whatever.
Not my house (but good for your husband!). I’m talking about young male slackers in particular. A study just came out that 1/3 of millennials are still living at home. Likely because the guys had worthless majors in college while female students were studying hard and getting accepted at law and medical schools.
Oh, okay. Got it.
to be fair it doesn’t help that you have a misandrist society that is intent on building girls up at the expense of tearing boys down.
and I don’t think it’s coincidence that marriages have declined and that divorces have risen.
