Second Danish zoo plans to kill young giraffe to stop inbreeding

**SNIP**

The second giraffe, coincidentally also named Marius, lives at the Danish Jyllands Park Zoo. To make room for a female giraffe it plans to acquire, the zoo plans to put down its 7-year-old male, balancing out genders in the facility.

“We can't have two males and one female. Then there will be fights,” zoo keeper Janni Lojtved Poulsen told Danish news agency Ritzau. “If the breeding program coordinator decides that he should be put down, then that's what we'll do,” Poulsen said.

**SNIP**

"It is no secret that animals are killed when there is no longer space, or if the animals don't have genes that are interesting enough," the group said in a statement. "The only way to stop this is to not visit zoos."

"When the cute animal babies that attract visitors grow up, they are not as interesting anymore.”

I worked on a dairy farm as a kid and the outcomes for male calves were pretty limited.

Only with accomplices, and I guess that can't happen in a zoo.

Your point is good and valid.

I’m kinda wondering what that those longneck deer taste like.

Not worth the trouble, I'm told.

Lemme get this straight, there were two Danish zoos who needed to get rid of a girraffe to prevent inbreding and rather than trading with eachother they both decided to kill the animal? I am not going to get as upset as some on FR but it certainly seems wasteful. Im gonna go out on a limb and guess both these zoos are run by the government.

OK, seriously you guys? Where do you think your meat comes from? Beef trees? Pork Stalks? Lamb Orchards? Why there so many freepers on here sounding like PETA moonbats anthropomorphising animals? Or at least the cute, fluffy ones like giraffes instead of boring ol’ livestock, which die in pretty much the same manner, except they get to watch the animals before them die before its their turn amongst a host of other horrors they would have to endure in your average commercial abbatoir...

Agree 100%. It's a zoo, they occasionally have to many animals, they euthanize some of them. Probably been going on forever. Giraffes are not an endangered species and zoos have successful breeding programs.

Animals at different zoos are often already inter-related. Trading is not always an option genetically.

The raging legal debate in Arkansas this week is this: If a man divorces his wife, is she still his cousin?

Wow, never thought of that........gotta think on it fer a while.

I must agree. I'm a crazy cat lady / animal lover, but a lot of people need to step back and gain some perspective. These giraffes are not being mistreated, tortured, or killed for some sort of sick sadistic thrill. And their deaths result in food for other animals, as nature intended.

we make distinctions between food animals and those not for food.

we can do that, we have that right.

my comments stand. has nothing to do with peta. there’s no pressing need to euthanize the giraffe. this whole disposable everything mentality, get rid of it if i get bored with it or don’t want to care for it anymore crap just gets old.

I wouldn’t have any problem eating the meat. Its an ungulate like a deer or moose.
