Just how much water is in all of this snow on the ground?

There is a lot of snow on the ground in Michigan. When the snow melts, just how much water is in all of the snow on the ground now?

The top graphic shows the "snow water equivalent" for the Lower Peninsula. This means the amount of liquid if the snow in a tube was all melted at once.



All of the Lower Peninsula has at least one inch of liquid in the snow. Most of the Lower Peninsula has two to six inches of liquid in the form of snow. The heaviest snowfall areas in northwest Lower Michigan have between six and ten inches of water in the snow that is currently on the ground. According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, here is how much water is in the snow: Grand Rapids - 5.2" / Detroit - 3.5" / Ann Arbor - 3.5" / Lansing - 2.8" / Muskegon - 2.8" / Flint - 2.7" / Saginaw - 2.0" / Bay City - 2.0" / Jackson - 1.9"

There is even more water in the snow on the ground in the Upper Peninsula. The graphic of the Upper Peninsula water equivalent of snow shows a lot of water in the snow on the ground. All of the Upper Peninsula has at least four to six inches of water in the snow on the ground. About half of the U.P. has over six inches of water in the snow, and the Lake Superior shoreline and Keewanaw Peninsula has between 10 and 20 inches of water in the snow on the ground.



Obviously if this snow all melts at once, there will be a high risk of flooding in Michigan. Here is what the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids says about the flooding risk. A large warm-up is still expected next week. Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday could have temperatures in the 40s in a large part of Lower Michigan. Next Saturday's warmth could come with rainfall over one inch in parts of Lower Michigan.

I'm also working to figure out how much the snow melt will affect the Great Lakes Levels. I think it is safe to say right now that the melting snow will help raise the lakes more. Currently Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are 12 inches higher than this time last year, but still 13 inches below the long term average.

A freak warm spell might spell flooding.

Fortunately Michigan is soggy in dry years so most of us don’t live in terribly flood prone areas. It seems to be the Michigan cities that experience real flooding.

Remember they were taking pictures of fish in Grand rapids windowsills last spring.

Looks like a cold week after a very few warm days. Hopefully that will lead to this melting gradually.

The great lakes should come up considerably. Very wet last year, lots of snow this winter and evaporation held to a minimum by the ice cover.

I think that 6 inches of fluffy snow will melt down into 1 inch of water. If the snow is packed or dense, the conversion is obviously different.

The stuff we got today in Indiana was real dry. The meteorology guys said the ratio was between 20:1 and 25:1.

The TV weather guy said that the ice cover helps keep water in the lake by preventing evaporation.

That's the problem with nutcase conspiracy theories. Nobody here said anything about the snow being dry or not melting.

I was told a lot of things about this snow this season normal folks all over the US are puzzled by this snow.

I am tired of the best way to shut down conversation is to marginalize a topic, we have politicians afraid of their own shadows, good people wont run because they have flaws in their pass, all the while we lose yards of ground at a time, because we been tin foiled to death by the opposition.

We should be curious and check out every thing.
