Science Says Drinking Guinness Makes You Bitter Health
Foodbeast ^ | February 10, 2014 | Nora Landis-Shack

Next time you and your friends are our for a pint, maybe hold off on the dark stout. As tempting as it might be in this wintry weather, scientists have recently released a study suggesting that stout beer, Guinness in particular, might make you bitter. The study links tart and bitter tastes with, you guessed it, a tart and bitter mind.

When consumed in “delicate situations,” bitter drinks might lead people to “voicing thoughts they’ll later regret.” The study asked people to rate certain scenarios on how morally questionable they were. Those with bitter drinks were much harsher on the subject of each scenario.

Other drinks that might have this effect are gin and tonics, which means I need to find replacements for two of my favorite drinks. I’m pretty bitter about it.

Many of my friends in Derry drink “The Dark Stuff” on a daily basis and I have found them to be the opposite of bitter.

I’m drinking Guinness NOW complemented with an Aurora cigar and I must say I feel pretty good with limited bitterness. The study seems askew.

Some years ago, Guinness changed the shape of its bottle. I swear they changed what was inside it as well and that the old Guinness tasted better.

Well, if drinking a bitter beer makes you bitter, then I’m going to drink a Dr Pepper and buy a stethoscope speculum.

There.

Fixed.

No need to thank me...

>> I drink Guinness Stout, triple-hopped Ales and heavily peated Islay Single Malt Scotches. I eschew anything labelled “Lite” and I don’t drink any stinking Merlot! Drink like a man or step away from the bar!

Ha! Laphroaig and Murphy’s when you’re on a diet — otherwise, Lagavulin and Guinness.

There is an interesting theory being bandied about that there is a reason our sense of taste is associated with sweet, sour, salty, bitter and savory. This is because several different forms of these things may be essential to good health.

Important sugars include glucose, fructose, galactose, sucrose, maltose and lactose.

Important salts include the balanced electrolytes in our blood.

From there, sour and bitter, while seemingly unpleasant, are often indicators of all sorts of essential chemicals, as well as poisons.

Savory is an indicator of glutamate, which is an important neurotransmitter.

And of protein as well.

All is right with the world.

Come on and admit you're bitter - bitter that you only bought one six pack!

Laphroig was the first Islay Malt I ever had the pleasure to enjoy. That was several decades ago.

I now favor Lagavulin - My recent experiences with Laphroig have been disappointing - I believe they are damping it down to cater to to the masses.
