Scientists mystified as 20 earthquakes hit Oklahoma in one day

Residents of Oklahoma were left feeling rattled over the weekend after a strong of some 20 earthquakes as powerful as 3.5 magnitude rocked the central part of the state on Saturday alone.

Areas north of Oklahoma City felt the brunt of the temblors, which some say were accompanied by startling booms like the sound of an explosion.

The mystery earthquake wave now has residents fearing for their personal safety and the security of their property. Meanwhile, scientists have been left scratching their heads over the quakes, which are becoming more frequent each day.

arthquakes as powerful as 3.5 magnitude

Isn't that the same as saying "barely too small to notice"?

When I lived in Alaska you could miss a 4.5 just by doing something besides sitting still.

Replace ‘strong’ with ‘string’ and I suspect you’ll see what the author intended to write...

From the article: “One possibility is geological.”

You think???

I read this article and all the sensational breathless descriptions match exactly what we felt in NJ when there was a small quake. A loud boom, feels like windows get hit.

Do they remember that within the last (year or two?) there was a quake that rattled most of the East Coast? You get articles like this because everyone is being dumbed down about the natural world in which they live.

“Science” writing is beginning to resemble listening to Coast to Coast. A lot of sensational verbiage made to sound science based. I doubt very much that scientists are “mystified” by this.

Makes me wonder. I don't know how close Oklahoma is to the New Madrid fault, but just think if the "unthinkable" happens:

1. The Yellowstone Caldera erupts
2. The New Madrid Fault slips
3. The San Andreas fault slips
4. The East Coast fault slips
5. The Ramapo Fault slips

all at the same time!

The United States is finished, destroyed, probably almost completely wiped out.

Little wonder the USA is not mentioned in Biblical prophesy.

strong = string

It’s a typo, which is just as bad, if not worse.

That’s all OKC needs is a massive volcano to pop up. At least maybe it would divert the tornados.

there was a quake that rattled most of the East Coast?

Yeah, the only reason I knew it happened was because I was on the 2nd floor of a building and my desk rattled a little.

Mom and Dad, Mrs WBill, etc etc had no idea.

As a side note, the (not-too-bright, prone to hysteria) girl who sat in the office next to mine started to panic. "What do I do? Where will I go? What if there are AFTERSHOCKS!?" Imagine someone standing there, hollering this, with the back of their hand thrown dramatically to their forehead, and you'd get it....

I tossed a cold bucket of water on the panic party. "First, if you really are worried about aftershocks, then I'd get away from that floor-to-ceiling plate glass window you're standing next to. Then, if you're really, really worried, you can go stand outside in the parking lot for awhile. Nothing will fall on you there." End of panic attack.

“Makes me wonder. I don’t know how close Oklahoma is to the New Madrid fault, but just think if the “unthinkable” happens:
1. The Yellowstone Caldera erupts”

Most of the articles about the Yellowstone Caldera have included hysterical exaggerations. The Caldera is very long, very wide, very shallow, less than 10% of it molten, with many outlets and very generally weak. But yes. If all of the hypothetical events in your list did happen, the effects would be very costly and difficult for many.

What will really happen when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts?
