She Allegedly Went on a Simple Jog in Her Toe Shoes. So Why Did She End Up...in Handcuffs?
The Blaze ^ | February 21, 2014 | Dave Urbanski

It allegedly started with her jogging in her toe shoes and sporting headphones. It ended in video of her screaming and being led away in handcuffs. What happened in between is a matter of debate, but video showing parts of the incident is certainly gaining traction online.

Whatever the woman did to get the attention of Austin, Texas police, a witness’ video of cops detaining her on a city sidewalk Thursday morning then escorting her to a nearby squad car indicate she was not happy with their actions.

Student Chris Quintero, who the Daily Texan reported witnessed the arrest, said he saw the woman jogging with headphones on when police ran after her. When the woman failed to stop, the officer grabbed her by the arm and handcuffed her, Quintero said.

According to a statement to The Daily Texan from police spokeswoman Lisa Cortinas: “[In this case], the call is titled failure to identify.”

Contrast the actions of the Austin PD when confronted with a girl crossing against a red light on foot with those of the Fort Worth PD when confronted with a car going the wrong way down a one-way street. Very different approach to public safety:

I was driving in Fort Worth near Sundance Square last weekend, and ended up going the wrong way down a one-way due to all the construction and I did not see a sign. When I realized my ooops, I attempted to quickly take the next turn.... but a police office saw me and immediately sped up, and put his lights and stopped right in front of me. So there I was stopped by a police car, facing the police car, all lit up with police lights... and no front plate. He motioned for me to pull forward and turn right, and then...... went on his way. Such a friendly city, Fort Worth is!

The cop sees the guy going the wrong way on a one-way street, and rather than demanding ID, pointing a gun at him, or even giving him a ticket, he blocks traffic for him, gets him safely off onto a side road and on his way and once the problem is cleared up... leaves. Amazing. Kudos. I wish there were more of his type around.

So Police should routinely stop people and interfere with free pursuit of, whatever. Should this be commonplace, or should it be rare?

She looks fit.
She should have kept running and made those lardasses have to waddle after her.
Would have loved seeing them spew doughtnuts and clutch at their chests.
What the heck is going on with the police in this country?

I never carry ID, and running with both ears plugged isn't illegal. Neither is running while mostly deaf (raises hand).

Jaywalking shouldn't be a throw down on the sidewalk with handcuffs kind of crime.

Perhaps you lost your sense of freedom, up there among the yankees.

"Am I the only one who imagined this?"

No.

and then I remembered that they were also called pointe shoes in my day and then I remembered how I, one day decided to wear them on the street and ruined them. Thus I assumed she was wearing a deadly weapon and that's why she was cuffed. Now I see she was wearing the silliest looking things ever invented.

She jaywalked...

That's not the issue here. The issue here is the over-reaction on the part of the cops.

Evidently, the cops yelled at her to stop, but she couldn't hear them because of the earphones (and I am quick to point out that it is neither illegal or unusual to wear earphones while jogging).

So the cop grabs her arm, which startled and frightened the girl. At this point, the cops had a choice. Give the girl a moment to calm down. Or handcuff her and shove her into the back of a patrol car.

The cops chose the second (nazi) option.

My kids have used waterproof toe shoes for their lifeguarding duties. Evidently they work pretty well.

>>who carries ID when jogging??

I know a guy who got arrested ten years ago for failure to identify at the beach. That’s the state of things in Amerika.

>I hope she cleans their clock in court.<

.
It’s not the fat cops’ (with the shallow pockets) clock that will be cleaned but the city’s (with the deep pockets).

Court costs will be paid by the citizens of Austin and the final winners will be the lawyers.

This stuff has always happened all around the country.

What is different today is ubiquitous video cameras. Security surveillance systems in many businesses and every citizen with a smartphone. The police relied upon the dynamic of their word against the citizens’ word. Now there is video and they wind up on YouTube before they can try to get a gag order to supress the video.

Things change.

I think the point of them is to almost be barefoot, but still have protection. Some runners swear by them because they say you use your foot muscles/tendons as designed.

For myself, I would never leave home without ID (how would the police know who to call if I died?) nor would I jeopardize my own safety by plugging my ears so I can’t even hear traffic. (FYI - I didn’t like the nanny state and am glad to back in the land of the much free-er. Like I said - call me old fashioned...)

Nothing illegal about what the girl did - except jaywalk. (I’ve been stopped for jaywalking myself - no ticket because I listened to the cop!)

Yes, she was manhandled by the cops. maybe if she’d HEARD them, it would have all been avoided.

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY is never out of style. That’s my point.
