At the USDA’s annual Agricultural Outlook Forum on Thursday during a panel discussion about attracting young people to the farming industry, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack asked a panelist how she would convince an inner city “minority” child who “doesn’t even know what a tomato is.”

“Emily, I want you to envision an inner city child,” Vilsack said to Emily Oakley, interim director of the National Young Farmer Coalition. “Could be African American, could be Hispanic, could be Native American, Asian, whatever, a minority. You’re talking to that child. That child doesn’t even know what a tomato is much less what you are talking about,” Vilsack said. “I want you to convince that kid that he ought to think about farming.” …

Theoretically, someone could convince their parents to get them involved if it meant being paid copious amounts of money and being able to earn a good living off of it as opposed to surviving off welfare. But you’d sure need a better PR guy than this.

Parents who are so ignorant or so uncaring about children, that they would allow their own children to be this ignorant shouldn’t be enabled by the government to raise children. It’s called abuse and neglect. We, as a society, have to put the children first, not the moochers and looters of the Democratic Party, the government unions and the welfare recipients.

For crying out loud, then take them on a field trip to the produce aisle at the grocery store. You can be sure they all know what a cell phone looks like.

And we are all supposed to interrupt our lives and get excited about some kids who don’t eat tomatoes? To paraphrase the famous French line, “ let them eat broccoli!” The country is being flushed right down the sewer, our liberties and ability to earn our livings are bring deliberately destroyed, our defenses are bring methodically weakened, our allies are bring stabbed I. The back as no nation on earth trusts us anymore — if some kids aren’t getting tomatoes talk to their parents about it, not us! ( ps: tomatoes are the easiest thing for kids to grow , right after marijuana).

It’s just that the minority peeps under about 40 where I live have indicated they will NEVER EVER ‘farm’ again.

Under any circumstances whatsoever.

Because slavery.

This appears to be about an imaginary “inner-city” kid that has never heard of a tomato; not from any of the humans around him, somehow. Take note that Vilsack (a Dem) has to “envision” his neo-stereotype rather than go out and actually talk to any inner-city kids . . .

This is the first phase of dividing the land so everyone will have a chance to grow a tomato.

Most politicians won’t dare go to inner city , and if one tried to talk with the street kids there about tomatoes he’d probably just get blown away or knifed anyway . Ps: tomatoes are those red things in double whoppers.

This is the first phase of dividing the land so everyone will have a chance to grow a tomato.

Sigh. The government will probably move in that direction and do it terribly wrong and it will all be horrible.

However -- I do believe that many Americans (not simply inner city kids) could have better lives if they were given the equivalent of "40 acres and a mule". Move to the country. Own land. Grow food. Be a prepper. Be self-sufficient. Maybe join in community projects (kind of like Amish barn raising).

People COULD get out of the rat race.
People COULD get their independence back.
People COULD live healthier lives.

But the government would screw up any such proposal, and certainly inner city people would run away from such opportunities because they would perceive it all as picking cotton, wearing chains, and working for massa on de plantation.

Personally, if I were younger and someone offered me a chance to have a homestead, I'd jump at the chance.

Why does he need to farm? He has welfare and food stamps.
