LEXINGTON, Miss. - Workers at a Mississippi funeral home say they found a man alive and kicking when they opened a body bag.

Holmes County Coroner Dexter Howard calls it a miracle that 78-year-old Walter Williams is alive.

The coroner was called to Williams' home in Lexington, a community north of Jackson, where family members believed he had died.

Howard says Williams had no pulse and was pronounced dead Wednesday at 9 p.m.

Early Thursday, workers at Porter and Sons Funeral Home were preparing to embalm Williams when he started to kick in the body bag.

It was one of those “How did I end up here” moments.
Locked eyes with someone and said, “Never speak of this.”

I can relate, though this one involved a hole in the sheetrock, a peanut butter filled Kong ball, and a freeway. More or less in that order.

Waking up is at the heart of vivisepulture.

In this case, he wasn't buried. Therefore, no vivisepulture.

“This is why the traditional “wake” was once held.”

This is why the autopsy, embalming and cremating were invented. No one ever survived either one of those.

I built my own coffin. It's nice looking. Until I really, really need it, I store antennas in it and drag it out for Halloween.

While building it, and after a few beers, I did fall asleep in it during a fit check.

Scared the ex pretty badly. Fortunately, she's gone now.

He will likely get a bill from said coroner for the transport to the funeral home.

I’d rather take my chances with a wake. :)

That’s reassuring, but not nearly as much fun. :)

In the 1918 flu pandemic the base hospital at Camp Dodge Iowa was treating many, and was finally quarantined. Many died and a make-shift morgue was created. One night the sergeant sent an enlisted orderly out to get a body from the morgue...as the orderly was carrying the body, the body spoke... ‘Put me down and I’ll walk!’ All planned ahead of time, of course to play a ‘cruel’ joke on the orderly.

My dad said this was a true story...

Can you even zip yourself out from inside a body bag? I’m guessing no. He’s lucky he didn’t suffocate. Nightmare stuff, need!

I like it.

How many people have spent the first few days on their first ship, running around looking for a bucket of elbow grease, some relative bearings or simply told to stand on the deck looking for a radio wave or most importantly, the Mail Buoy or some other nonexistent article?

No, I never did BUT would imagine in today’s Navy it would come under the ‘harassment rules’ regarding initiation.

The ‘good old days’ of clean fun while crossing the Equator, being inducted into the Chief Petty Officer Community, drinking your Dolphins, having your Dolphins, Tridents, or advancement in rate badges ‘tacked’ onto your arm and other rites of passages considered ‘barbaric’ by the PC crowd.

Vivisemisepulture? What’s Latin for “almost buried”?
