Couple who found $10m hoard of gold coins could have broken law
Daily mail ^

The Northern Californian couple who found $10 million worth of gold coins on their land could have broken California Law for failing to report their stunning discovery to police, it emerged today.

.....

But, according to Californian Law, the couple should have declared their findings to the police within a ‘reasonable time’ of finding it.

The Californian Civil Code, sub-section 2080, also states that a notice must go in the local paper if the haul is worth more than $250.

Usually, breaking the Civil Code isn’t an arrestable offense but punished with a fine.

.....

But, according to one Gold Country Sheriff’s Department, the matter is taken so seriously that the couple could be called in for questioning and ‘could face arrest’.

It was found on their own property. It belongs to them. Should I call the police to report I found a booger?

I wouldn’t have announced this. At the very least I’d have moved to a non-income tax state and then quietly started selling. Better yet....how about moving to a country where they don’t figure most of what you’ve got belongs to someone else.

There are laws like this in nearly every state. The feds claim the right to any treasure salvaged from wrecks. You are entitled to a percentage, but it is a pittance.

We already live in a socialist society. Everything already belongs to the state.

Ah, the enlightened and progressive California. Utopia on Earth. Why, it’s so utopic that people find millions of dollars of gold coins in their own back yards. So wonderful.

Oh, and face arrest in so doing. Forgot to mention that.

Yes, I thought that too.

Somehow I KNEW that CA would get their grubby paws on this stash.

By the time all is said and done, I bet the "lucky" finders end up OWING CA some serious $.

There's a lesson here, kiddies.

With liberals, you will never win.

Now had this couple given a few congressmen some of the coins, it would be all good.

I didn’t use those words, but it is what I basically posted in the first thread about this. I’d buy a small place in a tax friendly state and claim I found it there, if I claimed it at all.
