Professor Kevin Blackistone at U Maryland is an ESPN panelist who thinks the Star-Spangled Banner is a “war anthem” and other insults.

The Long Beach State Big Brown Music Machine played the best national anthem by you’ll hear. Too bad our football team was disbanded.

If you like Dixie, listen to the end of it.

Let’s all sing the 4 verses together.

Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
‘Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

I don't particularly like "America the Beautiful" (alabaster cities?) I prefer the original words to the tune, O Mother Dear, Jerusalem

Reagan’s talk about the city on the hill made me very nervous too. Did the founders reach too far?

Too bad our (CSULB) football team was disbanded.

OMG, are you going back a long ways.

I go back to Tark the Shark at CSULB, as well as Lute Olsen (at LBCC). I also had the privilege of meeting Coach Allen on several occasions during his stint as a 49er coach.

We were robbed in that game against UCLA!! (not that I hold a grudge ;)

BTW, the Niner band always did a great version of the Anthem in those days as well.

Of those four beautiful and inspiring verses, this one always seems most poignant to me:

"Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

That always chokes me up a bit.

Allow me to submit my own feeble musical attempt to pay tribute to our flag, our fighting troops, and our "One Nation, Under God"...though it's not even in the same solar system as the wonderful patriotic songs and hymns others have written over the years.

I believe the audio of the first youtube link were made by Jan Mickelson and a tech guy (unsure of his name). Jan is a talk show Host on WHO out of Des Moines. He used to play this years ago on his show.. They combined existing recordings he had collected and mixed them together for this project.
