With number on wrist, Venezuelans queue at markets
Yahoo News ^ | 03/08/2014 | Laurent Thomet

Patricia Gamboa arrived at a government-run supermarket in western Venezuela at 2:00 am, six hours before doors opened, to be first in line and buy whatever she could get her hands on.

As dawn broke, about 200 people stood behind her outside the Bicentenario shop in San Cristobal, with numbers written on their wrists with green markers to avoid arguments over who came first.

What was she hoping to buy, then?

"Whatever they have," she said, echoing the sentiment of everybody else reading, sipping coffee or sitting on the sidewalk to pass the time.

Residents can only shop at Bicentenario on certain days, which are decided by the last numbers on their ID cards. Once in line, people agreed on the wrist number system to avoid trouble, but the shop also assigns them paper numbers.

Across the city, even longer lines stretched 200 meters (yards) deep at two private supermarkets

Critics say businesses are not given enough dollars by the government through its currency agency to import enough goods.

Maduro blames smugglers who take advantage of Venezuela's weak currency to sell food and gasoline across the border in Colombia at a hefty profit.

Those lucky enough to find what they need at government-run stores will pay at regulated prices. At private markets, items can be three, four, even seven times more expensive.

But there is a black market rate in Venezuela, which has quadrupled over the past years from 20 to around 80 bolivars to the dollar.

"It's a crime," the socialist leader said, vowing to take economic and police action. "You make more by selling milk than selling cocaine today at the border."

But many residents of San Cristobal, an opposition stronghold, say corrupt government workers are among those smuggling goods across the border.

That was my first thought, as well.

Based on their ID cards.

We should set up an exchange program to send our progressives and socialist dreamers over and bring capitalist minded Venezuelans here.

Following the predictable pattern.

So I have to ask, why are people who insist on following the failed policies of the past called “Progressive”? And why do so many of us allow them to pervert that word?

Of course that was the first thing I thought of as well. So, this tells me two potential things.

First, although not deployed in a sophisticated manner this instance, yet we can now see how and why such a personal numeric system will likely be used.

Second, it now seems pretty clear that there will be some world-wide collapse requiring this personal numeric system. It seems likely that it could be an economic collapse, but it could also be an agricultural collapse due to devastation of war. Recall, that in the day a loaf of bread will cost a day's wages.

So, it seems that we can now see how people will willingly apply the mark to themselves and why. The question is when.

I keep saying this over and over. Progressives/Liberals are not very bright and are weak-spirited.

I’m not trying to be unkind in saying this, but they are broadly least among us able to take care of themselves and make good personal decisions, therefore, they like, want, and seek out a strong government to help them order their lives, and somehow they are deceived into thinking that everyone is like them and needs this coerced government intrusion.

They view bigger government as a matter of charity helping them and others they know who cannot do life by themselves. They need government. For the rest of us )generally Conservatives), we abide in faith in God and self-sufficiency. We therefore want government as far away from us as humanly possible!

This is the difference and why “Progressives” constantly yearn for government to take care of them.

Chavez was not an invader and he gained power through legal means (although he has not kept it through legal means)

Basically, the Venezualans chose their fate. I could not care less if they have to stand in bread lines. Lets hope the Chavistas stay in power for another 20 years, as a festering sore and lesson to others who think socialism is grand
