'A little PC crept in': 'Rocket Boys' author Homer Hickam annoyed by politicization in 'Cosmos'

Like a lot of people, "Rocket Boys" author and former NASA engineer Homer Hickam tuned into last night's premiere of "Cosmos," a reboot of Carl Sagan's 13-part science series. Unfortunately, he wound up being disappointed. The show's rather inauspicious beginning probably didn't help:

Funny how they manage to overlook that the earliest incarnation of the big bang theory came from Monsignor Georges Lemaître.

Instead they attribute it to Edwin Hubble. Not to take anything away from Hubble but he didn’t originate the theory.

Could've made more space for actual science. instead had 15 minutes of a cartoon of a middle ages guy that thought the earth wasn't the center of the universe and the Church of that tome killed him for saying so.

Could've just mentioned his name, said he was executed by the Church for thinking of the Universe as infinite and gone on. I doubt they will go on for 15 minutes about scientists who helped the Nazi's murder 11 million people...

Who’s that androgynous physicist and his recent stuff? Brian Cox. It’s a lot better.

When I saw they were bringing back Cosmos I knew it would be the “New and Improved” politically-correct, anthropomorphic Global Warming promoter crap, with Obama no less introducing it.

Way back when, my love for science had me waiting all week to watch Cosmos.

Still, even if it was non-political, what’s the point?

Back when it aired, we didn’t have all the science channels that abound now: History, Animal Planet, National Geographic (and subsidiaries), Science Channel, Discovery, Smithsonian, etc., etc.

Nope. Not gonna watch the new Cosmos.

You can watch it...just throw a pillow at the bad parts or turn down the volume.

The husband wanted to watch this. I tried for a few minutes. I thought it was awful. Lots of special effects to appeal to “Star Wars” fans, I suppose. I started reading and only half watched most of it.

You can state a point and place it historical context, without blasting an entire faith. These PC clowns chose purposely to smear an entire religion, as well as the wider Christian faith.

Yes you can state a point and place it in historical context. But your approach would be an honest one. For these leftists it’s all part of the assault on religion and Western civilization.

I found “How the Universe Works”, narrated by Mike Rowe from a few years ago, to be a wondeful (and relaxing) presentation.

Giordana Bruno. Ever hear of him?

According to this their facts may not have been accurate, including that he was not a scientist. http://www.businessinsider.com/the-big-problem-with-the-cosmos-premiere-2014-3

Yah. I’ve heard of the guy. He was probably more of a mystic than a scientist as we understand the term. His ideas about the size of the universe and its composition came to him in dreams, not by means of observations and deduction from them.

He was executed for heresy, including denial of the divinity of Christ, denial of the Trinity, and denial of the virginity of Mary. These notions would get you killed at the time just about anywhere in Europe.

His notions about the universe, which turned out to be to some extent in line with what was eventually discovered by science, played little if any role in his execution.

I’m hoping the next episode will be better, now that they’ve taken their obligatory leftie swipe at the Church.
