That makes mail-order brides sound like a good idea

The "nice-but-not-rich/handsome/exciting-enough" guys experience lack of success in their 20's, until women hitting 35 decide to "settle". Many men say "no thanks" to accepting a high-mileage woman who will never really be satisfied with him anyway.

And that's why God in his infinite wisdom created Asian Women

Got to be careful, though. Asian women are not immune to the disease that is modern American slut/divorce culture. She starts out feminine and devoted, then watches a few seasons of Oprah and it's BAM! "I want half, Eddie!".

If I wasn’t happily married for 25 years I would love to meet your daughter.

And yes, men are as superficial as women. And everyone is missing out.

a lot of girls have been taught that they have to rely on themselves

As a father of three boys, I cannot personally speak to what girls are taught.

However; one of the most important parental wisdoms I have pressed onto my children is to never marry a girl that moves from her daddy's house to yours. Only marry a girl that has lived on her own. A girl that is marrying because she wants you; not because she needs you, or imagines you to be the solution to her problems.

Seems to have been the case for quite a while now. The trouble for women of this turn of mind is that when they are in their early thirties and beginning to get twinges of settling down they find that men their age are more interested in hooking up with twenty-somethings.

I tell my daughters: find the man you are going to marry before you hit 25. Under 25, you have maximal selection if you're up to dating guys up to 30. Past 30, a large percentage of guys are either taken, or divorced and cynical.

For those seeking to "burnish their resume", I recommend tourist towns in Northern Germany during the summer. They are "target rich environments", with the highest per capita population of newly divorced women that I have ever encountered.

And none of them had that NYC nasal twang.

Warren Zevon captured it perfectly in the first verse of "Lawyers, Guns, and Money"...lol

Cynicism reigns supreme in my group. lol

My daughter just ended a relationship of 5+ years. I never pressed her to marry the father of my grandson, because I knew it wouldn't work. She was a college grad, he a HS grad with no real plans for the future, a bad mix considering he recently turned 30.

My focus was on the needs of my grandson. My daughter and I will have more serious chats when I meet her next beau.

I know a young man that lived on one of the coasts. Young and attractive with a low six figure income he had plenty of dates.

He complained that west and east coast women were superficial, money hungry users, and living out modeled behaviour they see by their older peers.

He became so sick of this in his twenties that he changed careers and restarted in Texas to find a woman who who had solid values. He did and marriage soon followed.

AMEN!

Never marry straight from the home; she lives on her own and lives for herself for a while.

Don’t marry someone who isn’t making her own way or interested in doing that.

PB, I wonder what it’s like if the ‘desirable’ guy ends up wanting commitment, but a woman shies away since she herself, would like to have her own fun after years of working hard.

LOL! I remember watching that on my wedding night in 1986.

It’s not right that men complain about no decent women when there are plenty of men out there wasting their twenties with the very women they complain about.

Our daughter was taught at a young age there are generally two types of women out there. The partying type and the marrying type. When you decide to be the party type you exclude the men looking to get married. Another thing I taught her was No man especially someone looking for a wife wants other men to say they had you before he did.... Just facts of life.

Agree; I had a bad first relationship (a result of bad self esteem and diffident parents) and I decided to abstain and I’ve been chaste for nearly ten years. It’s saved my skin.

One thing I do appreciate is that these days women are the ones who decide if whether or not they’ll be the marrying type or the fun girl type.

By my definition of "desirable" (multiple attractive women want him), such a man would just decide "next!" and move on.

Guys have an advantage over women, in that they can wait into their 30's or 40's for marriage, while a woman starts seeing her expiration date approaching after she passes 30.

Very true. Women will consider it "not fair", but lots of things in life aren't fair.

“My sons and his friends say that all the girls want men as “friends”.
No interest in the future or children.”

You can explain to your son that when a girl says she wants to be “friends” with a man, she’s preempting the expectation of sex for buying her dinner.

The dating culture (as opposed to the friend culture) demands sex on the third date. No sex, no fourth date. No fourth date, no marriage.

The girls your son knows are just trying to find their way to marriage and children without having to sleep with twenty-five men to get there.

Young women created the “friend zone” as a way to spend time with men, while working around the sex-on-the-third-date-culture they were born into. Don’t hate the players; hate the game.
